Villa Sornano
Location address: Loc.Sornano - Siena
Nestled in the Chianti hills on the edge of a cluster of restored farmhouses Villa Sornano lies a few minutes from Poggibonsi. It is surrounded by rolling hills and overlooks the valley below and the medieval towers of San Gimignano in the distance.

The villa has terraced patios that lead down to a large pool. From the terraces and well-maintained gardens there is a wonderful view of the Tuscan hills dotted with villages and towns.

In one corner of the garden there is a swinging chair from where you can admire the sun set over San Gimignano. The villa and its gardens are protected from its neighbours by a fence with electric gate.

The large well-restored house is spacious, light and airy with its many doors that lead onto the patio and into the garden. To the right of the entrance hall there is a study that leads to a bedroom with a double bed and an ensuite bathroom with shower.

On the left of the entrance you find yourself in a large lounge that has a fireplace. The floor is tastefully tiled with terracotta tiles and white glazed tiles. The high ceiling has the original wooden beams and terracotta tiles. In the lounge there is a large antique pendance with a flat screen TV and DVD.

From the lounge you pass into a large hall opening onto the first floor. There is a staircase graced by a cast iron railing. In the hall there is a guest toilet. Off the hall there is a door leading to the back garden and patios.

To the left of the hall there is a dining room with an antique wooden table and sideboard. In one corner of the dining room there is a comfortable corner with wicker chairs and a TV. From this room there is a door that leads out to the gardens at the front of the house.

On the right of the hall a door leads to the fully equipped kitchen. From here there is access to the small vegetable garden and another door that leads onto the furnished patio with BBQ.

The entire first floor has a wooden floor and high ceilings with wooden beams and terracotta tiles. At the top of the stairs on the first floor there is a double bedrooom with en-suite bathroom with shower. The windows of this room look across the olive groves that neighbour the property on one side.

There is also a bathroom with a bath-tub and marble holy water fonts converted into his and hers basins. A door leads off the hall into a long corridor off which there are 4 more bedrooms. The first is a double room with an antique painted bed and wardrobe.

There are 2 twin rooms (only one can become double, please request this when booking) with cast iron beds and antique wardrobes. From both the rooms there are doors that lead onto a small balcony from which there are steps down into the front garden.

At the end of the corridor there is another double bedroom with TV and an excellent view to the rear of the house and over the hills beyond. This room has an en-suite Jack and Jill bathroom together with one of the double bedrooms.

From the light and spacious villa there are many doors into the garden.

From the windows and garden there are beautiful views across the hills.
Pets are not allowed.

Pros The pool was wonderful and the outdoor areas around the villa. The views were spectacular. Plenty of room for everyone. Spacious rooms and living areas.
Cons Air conditioning would have been good as it was so hot. We understand that they are putting it in in October. An English speaking TV channel would have been a bonus. We felt the kitchen and BBQ utensils could be renewed and updated. There were a limited number of glasses for a big group.
Local attractions Castellina in Chianti, especially the gelato shop in the cave. Greve in Chianti and the Vignamaggio winery nearby. Sienna was wonderful. San Gimigianno was great.

What were the highlights of your holiday? the location of the villa afforded us many day-trips: firenze, greve, panzano, siena, pisa, san gimignano, colle val d'elsa, etc. we loved the ability to visit daily markets in under 15 minutes driving. it allowed us to connect to to the community where we were staying, and support the artisans/farmers/vendors who live/work in the area. also, the laid-back lifestyle in the small villages in tuscany was a pleasant departure from all of the larger tourist-y cities we visited, and also afforded us a much-needed respite from the pace of "normal" life back in Canada.
What was your overall impression of the accommodation?    amazing view, comfortable, clean, after 24 hours it felt like home
Did you have any unpleasant surprises during your stay with us? the smaller detached portion of our villa had a bit of a "musty" smell, as if it needed to be aired out a little bit. also, for one day, it smelled a bit like sewage, as if there was a back up in the sewage line even though there was no problem with any of the plumbing. the internet was not reliable - connection was strong one minute, and then gone the next, for no apparent reason. overall, these surprises were minor and did not detract from the overall experience.
Do you have any other comments regarding the accommodation or service? we spent 23 days in italy, 7 of which were spent at villa sornano. these 7 days were, by far, the highlight of our trip, and we are very much looking forward to returning to tuscany as soon as we can.

A problem was found with the pipeworks within the hamlet of Sornano and was fixed by the local commune - the smell was not within the actual villa.

What were the highlights of your holiday? Villa, Pool, Siena, San Gimianio, Pienza, Buonconvento
What was your overall impression of the accommodation?    Very good. Nicely laid out, comfortable. well maintained. Only negatives were limited range of glasses and cups etc for the kitchen. The second house was not very child friendly - the barriers were insufficient to stop kids falling from the mezzanie - rather unsafe.
Did you have any unpleasant surprises during your stay with us? Poggibonsi is not very nice as a town but villa location was great
Do you have any other comments regarding the accommodation or service?

What were the highlights of your holiday? The villa, it's pool, proximity to absolutely everything, a wonderful meal in Poggibonsi one evening where the family owners could not have been more accommodating, and Andrea the chef.
what was your overall impression of the accommodation?    Perfect. We could not have asked for better. The villa matched the web-site photos and was beautifully maintained. We would gladly rent it again. If it came up for sale we would love to know.
Did you have any unpleasant surprises? Road signs can be a little confusing. Otherwise nothing.
Do you have any other comments? This was quite simply the best week of a holiday we have ever had as a family. We would gladly use To Tuscany again. Please convey to the owners of the villa how much we enjoyed the use of their property.

I like To Tuscany, partly because it has a tremendous range of villas, and partly because (unlike many companies) it has an excellent website that provides what you really want when choosing a villa.

Our accommodation, which cost less than £800 for the week, is in a converted stone farmhouse next to a 12th Century Franciscan chapel. There is a pergola shaded by vines round the back here we quickly settle into a rhythm of eating long pasta suppers while the shadows lengthen.
