Athena-Urania at Casalta

Athena-Urania is a Tuscan villa composed of two interconnecting villas, therefore ideal for family groups. To the back of the villa is a large pergola furnished with table and chairs for dining outdoors while admiring the wonderful view of Panzano through the cypress trees.
Inside is a large, spacious open plan terracotta paved room. Along one all is the kitchen unit which is well equipped and includes gas hobs, a small fridge with freezer compartment, a microwave with grill. A large tradition Tuscan villa sink of marble provides the kitchen with some local character.
Directly in front of the kitchen unit is the sitting area which is composed of a large comfortable sofa and two wooden armchairs. To one side of the room is the oak dining table with four wooden chairs.
Off the back of the dining area is a large, spacious bathroom with shower. A second door leads to a small hall in which there is a wardrobe. Off this there are the two bedrooms. The first is a pretty double bedroom with two windows looking out towards Panzano. The large double iron handmade bed is graced by an arch in the back wall showing the original stone wall. The room also has a wardrobe and a mirror.
The second bedroom is a small single room, best for a child. The window looks out into the central courtyard. This room also has part of the original stone wall exposed, providing it a lovely warm effect.
The first living room interconnects to a second open plan room with a well-equipped kitchenette across one wall. It includes gas hobs, a small fridge with freezer compartment, a microwave with grill. There is also a traditional Tuscan stone sink.
Against the other wall is a large comfortable double sofa above which is an exposed stone wall providing the room with some of its original character. This room is completed by a round table with four chairs.
Passing under a typical Tuscan terracotta arch and down a couple of steps there is a little hall, off which is the bathroom and bedroom. The bathroom is spacious with a large shower across the back wall. The bedroom is a double room with plenty of space and furnished with a pretty iron bed with intricate lace work on the headboard. Completing the room is an armchair, mirror and double wardrobe.
The double bedrooms cannot be made into twin rooms.

Athena-Urania at Casalta

Casalta is a finely restored Tuscan hamlet of 9 villas that maintains all its original characteristics, with well maintained, simple gardens of local plant, shrubs and herbs. It is located in the heart of the Chianti within easy reach of Castellina in Chianti and Panzano in Chianti.
The pool is located a few steps away from the villas and is protected by a beautiful stone wall to one side, while the other has towering cypress trees through which there are fantastic views of the Chianti hills covered in vineyards and olive groves.
The hamlet, once owned by Galileo Galilei, is composed of two buildings around a quaint, traditional stone courtyard in which there is a pizza oven. To one side is an independent cottage while near the pool is a second, small cottage with the laundry. In front of the laundry is a large, stone terrace furnished with tables and chairs for communal use.
Pool Info
The pool is located up several stone steps behind the laundry room. It is protected from the hamlet by a high stone wall and iron gate. The other three sides of the pool are open with a cypress and fir trees.
Surrounding the pool is a large terracotta sun deck dotted with several umbrellas and sunbeds. Above the pool is a second, rarely used car park. There are some views of the Chianti hills through the cypress trees. The pool is 15 x 7 meter, 1.2-1.6 metres deep. Open from May to September.
Nearest town
Panzano is 5km from Casalta, this town has several shops and restaurants. Closer to the hamlet there is a the village Piazza where there is a good restaurant called Osteria della Piazza. Approximately 10km away there is another Chianti town, Castellina, where there are more shops and restaurants.

Our accommodation, which cost less than £800 for the week, is in a converted stone farmhouse next to a 12th Century Franciscan chapel. There is a pergola shaded by vines round the back here we quickly settle into a rhythm of eating long pasta suppers while the shadows lengthen.
