Casa Maddalena

Casa Maddalena is a beautifully restored five bedroom, three bathroom country house with a great deal of warmth and charm. In addition to the bathrooms, there is a toilet situated on the ground floor. Secluded from its sole neighbour its setting affords great views across the Valdarno valley that stretches from Florence to Rome with the Appenini mountains as a dramatic backdrop to the countryside location.
The flat landscape immediately surrounding the house are olive groves and vineyards, allowing plenty of space to wander and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the property's extensive grounds. The hills above are graced by the old pilgrims trail lined with seven antique hamlets, topped by Vallombrosa locally known for a visit from the Queen of England. There is a 12 x 6 metre pool a few metres away from the villa.
Inside, the traditional beamed ceilings and terracotta floors are highlighted by lovely furnishings and walls painted in rich pastels. Entering through the front door the fully fitted kitchen to the left is equipped with oven, gas hobs, fridge, freezer, microwave and dishwasher.
Ahead four steps take you down to the living room which has a beautiful old fire place which can also be used for grilling meat in true Tuscan style. To the right is the dining room, because of the old stone walls of Casa Maddalena this room stays cool in the summer. It has a large dining table that seats twelve.
To the right there is a double bedroom, although this is the smallest of the bedrooms there is an impressive four-poster bed and it is a very comfortable bedroom with high quality soft furnishing. En suite to this room there is a small W.C.
From the front door stairs lead up to the landing, there is oak wood flooring throughout the upstairs apart from the bathrooms. Ahead is the main bathroom, a bright room decorated with hand painted terracotta tiles, there is a full size bath tub which includes a whirl pool and a shower fitting.
To the left there are two bedrooms a twin and a triple. Both bedrooms are spacious with tasteful furnishing and ample wardrobe space. The triple bedroom has a double bed and a single bed.
To the right there are another two bedrooms a twin and a triple. Similar to the other two upstairs bedrooms, both bedrooms are spacious with tasteful furnishing and ample wardrobe space. The triple bedroom has an en-suite bathroom with shower.
The double doors from the lounge area lead out to a large terrace furnished both with tables and chairs for al fresco meals and comfortable loungers for afternoons in the sunshine.
The villa is tastefully decorated and has wooden floors throughout.

There is a 12 x 6 meter pool. The pool is located a few meters away from the house and overlooks a the surrounding olive groves. It is the perfect place to relax after a day of sight-seeing. The pool is open from May to October.
Nearest town
The nearest shop is in Reggello which is 2km away from the villa. There are many restaurant in the area however the best are Ristorante S. Caterina and pizzeria Torricelli both of these are within 8km from the villa. About 25km away there is a large town called Montevarchi where there are many amenities.

This property was good value for money and lots of space available and a great pool. The bedrooms were a good size and the outside space was excellent.
There was no air-conditioning in the bedrooms and no fans provided anywhere in the house (we purchased these outselves!) The location of the property was adequate and you had to travel to find places to eat out in the evening. The actual property could do with some tlc and the kitchen needs re-doing. Small things like there were no wine glasses etc which you would expect.
Guz (0.5 mile drive) - restaurant. Florence close by and Siena is just over an hour.

Een prachtig huis op een mooie rustige lokatie. Mooi en in oude Toscaanse stijl. Keurig verzorgde tuin, beplanting en zwembad.
De keuken was functioneel maar past helemaal niet in de stijl van het huis. Dat is erg jammer.

Gezellig huis. Leuk ingericht.
Keukens was niet schoon. Stoelen buiten waren verroest. Te weinig stoelen bij het zwembad. Toen het erg koud was mocht van de eigenaar de verwarming niet aan Volgens hem is er in Italie een wet dat je na 1 mei de verwarming niet aan mag doen.

What was your overall impression of the accommodation? The accommondation was as described but difficult to find. Particularly disappointing was the support when we got there - there was no English speaking contact which made it very difficult. There was no information pack about how to find the heating, or instructions about how to use the washing machine etc which meant a lot of time was spent trying to sort it all out.

Dear Michela,
All the information you had provided on the website about the house and area was a great help and very accurate.Though the house was on the left of the bend and not the right as directions said.It was easy to spot because of all the lovely pictures on your website. [Our comment - we have checked and corrected the directions]
We had a fantastic holiday staying in Casa Maddalena.
The house was lovely and the pool fantastic.
We did have to purchase two fans for the upstairs bedrooms, as sleep was impossible in the high temperatures without them. Though the bedrooms were lovely and spacious and the house big enough for our family of 7 to all manage to find their own space to relax.
The size of the balcony off the main bedroom was lovely surprise.At night we found that we all gathered there to watch the sunset,play some cards and enjoy some nice wine.
Our other surprise was finding and having to rescue a hegehog which had managed to survive all night in the filter of the swimming pool but wandered off quite happily once lifted out.
Apart from the house and Tuscany , one of our main delights was Reggello itself.We had no idea from your website just how nice this town was.When we arrived all the supermarkets were closed for lunch and we went to a lovely little bar/cafe in Reggello to await opening.Although food service had stopped a short while before our arrival the kind elderly owners seeing how tired we were made us some delicious pasta and despite speaking no English and our Italian being so limited managed to tell us all the good places to shop and where best to park our large van. Patrons of the bar later advised us when traffic wardens were coming and generally kept a helpful eye on us insuring that our stay was a trouble free one.We had several very nice meals in Reggello restuarants and great take away pizza !
My dissapointment was that the house was only for rent and not for sale as we could have happily stayed there !

Firstly, I must say we had a very happy holiday and all things seemed to run smoothly, even when the pool went green. Mr Politi, the owner, responded immediately and the problem was sorted.
Very clean and easy to keep.
Liked the number of bathrooms, eating terrace, pool and ease of access to the autostrada and railway. This is why we chose the property.
Unpleasant surprise - a hedgehog in the pool one morning, still swimming, which recovered eventually after being fished out!

What is the cost of the dinners?
The owner can provide the followivng types of dinners, you must book these in advance so that the cook is availalable for the day that you require. When booking please also confirm the number of people (minimum 6 ) and time you wish to eat.
Menu 1 - First course, second course, side dish and dessert for 45 Euro
Menu 2 - Starter, first course, second course, side dish and dessert for 50 Euro
Children's menu (under 6 years old) - 25 Euro
The items of the menus will be typical Tuscan and at the descretion of the cook based on available local produce. Drinks are extra.

Our accommodation, which cost less than £800 for the week, is in a converted stone farmhouse next to a 12th Century Franciscan chapel. There is a pergola shaded by vines round the back here we quickly settle into a rhythm of eating long pasta suppers while the shadows lengthen.
