Grossetto province and the Maremma
The province of Grosseto is located along the Southern Tuscan coast. It consists of 130 km of coast line with beaches, pinewoods and rocky shores are broken by numerous coves that are now tourist harbours: Punta Ala, Castiglione della Pescaia, Marina di Grosseto, Talamone, Porto Santo Stefano, Porto Ercole, Cala Galera and the harbours in the islands of Giglio and Giannutri. This coastal area is also known as the Maremma. It also boasts an interesting artistic and cultural heritage. Many etruscan remains, found inside the tombs which are scattered across the whole territory, are kept in the archeological museums of Grosseto, Massa Marittima, Vetulonia and in the archeological areas of Sovana, Vetulonia and Roselle.

In the province of Grosseto there are three wine routes: the wine roads «Colli di Maremma», «Monteregio di Massa Marittima» and the wine route «Montecucco».

What to do and see around Grosseto
Sorano, Parco Archeologico "La città del Tufo" contains numerous remains from the bronze age and the Etruscan period. The park is located in Sovana, this park has a beautiful, natural landscape. It covers three areas of great natural and scenic interest: Sovana, and its profusion of Etruscan necropolis, Vitozza with its 200 rocky caves shadowed by the ruins of the medieval castle, and Sorano, site of the impregnable Orsini fortress which today hosts a medieval museum. The park is open everyday during the summer (April – October) but only on weekends during the winter.
Etruscan tomb walking at Pitigliano is interesting for both young and old. The Etruscans excavated pathways several meters deep that connected their villages, these passages can still be traversed today and are intriguing as well as good exercise. To do this make sure you wear good walking shoes.

I like To Tuscany, partly because it has a tremendous range of villas, and partly because (unlike many companies) it has an excellent website that provides what you really want when choosing a villa.

Our accommodation, which cost less than £800 for the week, is in a converted stone farmhouse next to a 12th Century Franciscan chapel. There is a pergola shaded by vines round the back here we quickly settle into a rhythm of eating long pasta suppers while the shadows lengthen.
