FAQ
Villa Molinaccio has origins dating back to the 10th Century. It was originally built as a watchtower for defence and communication purposes between two castles. Over the following centuries the tower was destroyed and rebuilt in the traditional rural style. Evidence of the buildings past can still be found, especially in the external walls which are over a metre wide in places.

The large 'L' shaped swimming pool with diving board is set in a secluded part of the garden, surrounded by woodland. It is reached by crossing a wooden bridge over the river that runs through the property. The paved area surrounding the pool is furnished with loungers, sun umbrellas, tables and chairs.

Il Molinaccio was bought by the Ricasoli family, owners of the Castello di Brolio near Gaiole in Chianti, who turned it into a mill. The Ricasoli family crest is still in place and can be seen on the main facade of the building. The current owners have completely restored and refurbished both the main house and the barn, preserving the property's history, yet bringing it up to date with all the comforts of today's modern age.

The property consists of the main house with five double bedrooms and a barn which has been converted into two one bedroomed apartments. The house was completely renovated in 1999, and great care was taken to ensure this was done sympathetically, respecting the historical structure of the building.

Wherever possible local materials were used, which means, that whilst the property has all the comforts of a 21st Century villa, many of the original features still remain, making this a unique place to stay.

The villa and apartments are surrounded by five hectares of beautiful grounds with mature trees and shrubs, making this a very private setting. Terraces for outside dining can be found at both the front and the back of the property. There is a tributary of the river Massellone which runs through the gardens, however, this is not fenced in, so care must be taken with young children.

Both the main house and the two apartments have far reaching views towards the Castle of Meleto and the hilltop medieval village of Vertine.

The main house is entered through a set of double doors, which open directly into the large kitchen. Downstairs all the rooms have tiled floors and brick built vaulted ceilings. The fully fitted kitchen has wooden units with a built in oven with separate hobs, a large freestanding fridge with freezer section and a dishwasher. There is a built in storage cupboard set into the wall on one side, and a dining table and chairs sit in front of a wooden dresser at one end of the room.

To the left a brick arched doorway leads to the central hallway, and the downstairs bathroom with shower. A door to the right hand side of the hall opens into the main dining room. Another brick arched doorway in the kitchen leads into the lounge. This is a relaxing space with large comfortable sofas arranged in front of the open fireplace. There is a satellite TV with DVD player and a music system. French doors open onto a furnished terrace overlooking the gardens.

To the left hand side of the lounge is a doorway into the dining room. This room is rather special, with its superb floor to ceiling arched window which retains its original ironwork at one end and the original wooden bread oven (which still functions) at the other. In the centre is a large wooden dining table which can seat up to fourteen. Dotted around the room there is a collection of artefacts from the time it was used as a mill.

Access to the downstairs bedroom is off of the dining room. This is a spacious bedroom with a gently curved vaulted ceiling dating back to the time when there was a tower on the site. Comfortably furnished with a double bed, painted wardrobe, chest of drawers, baby cot, TV and a sofa.

The handmade original stone staircase has been carefully restored, and this leads from the main dining room, upstairs through a brick archway to the first floor landing. This level of the house retains the original 19th Century terracotta floors and the traditional beamed ceilings with terracotta typical of farmhouses in this region.

From the first floor landing area, there is access to two of the bedrooms, the family bathroom and the upstairs sitting room. The small sitting room has comfortable chairs and a desk, the walls have fitted shelves and freestanding bookcases filled with books, all arranged around the focal point of the room which is the enormous original open fireplace with stove, this is the ideal place to relax away from the heat of the day.

The master bedroom is to the left of the sitting room, and is a very bright spacious room, with three windows overlooking the gardens and rolling hillside. There is a double bed, large wardrobe, a chest of drawers and TV. It has its own private ensuite bathroom with shower.

The third double bedroom is through the sitting room to the right and has a queen sized wooden sleigh bed, large wardrobe and views over the gardens.

A second double bedroom to the left of the landing has two windows with views over the gardens and a double bed with wicker headboard, sofa, large wardrobe and chest of drawers.

The fourth bedroom to the right of the landing has twin beds with a large wardrobe and very large chest of drawers and two windows with views over the grounds. The large, bright family bathroom located next to the twin bedded room has a full sized bath with handheld shower.

The Barn was converted in 2000 into two separate self contained one bedroom apartments. Located in the grounds of the Villa close to the main house they are ideal for families or groups travelling together who would still like to have some privacy or space of their own.

The first apartment has double doors leading into an open plan lounge/kitchen/diner. The living space has a double height ceiling at one end and there is a mezzanine level where the bedroom is located over the lounge/kitchen area. The fitted wooden kitchen has a built in oven, separate hobs and fridge with freezer section. To one side is a dining table and chairs. To the left of the kitchen three steps lead into a small passageway which leads to the pretty tiled bathroom with shower.

Wooden stairs lead up to the galleried first floor which overlooks the main living area. This large bright open plan space has wooden floors with a double wooden sleigh bed and large wardrobe.

On-site caretakers are in residence in a second one bedroom apartment.
The caretakers can provide assistance with information on the local area, sightseeing and activities as well as booking restaurants and extras such as a chef or baby sitter. They maintain a low profile during rental periods if their assistance is not required.

Large mature grounds surround the villa making this a very secluded setting.

Great for large families or groups who still wish to have their own space.

In a great location for sightseeing with the historical centres of Arezzo, Cortona, Pisa, San Gimignano, Montalcino and Montepulciano, all within 1½ hours drive.

What were the highlights of your holiday? We spent our time in Tuscany touring around by bus with a hired driver (Silvia...from Piemme Service). We visited incredible places such as Volterra and Cortona and Siena and Montalcino and much more. We visited wineries such as Ricassoli and Banfi and had amazing dinners at restaurants and at the villa. Having Chef Mimmo cook for us one evening was a highlight. We also enjoyed dinner at La Botte di Bacco in Radda and at Il Latini in Florenece (suggested by Stephen and Cathy).
What was your overall impression of the accommodation?    Our accommodation at Il Mulinaccio was perfect in every respect. The owners....Stephen and Cathy...welcomed us upon arrival and then left us alone all week. We ran into them one day in Cortona...which was a pleasant surprise. The villa is well-equipped, spotlessly clean, and is convenient for day trips throughout Tuscany. There were 12 of us at the villa and everyone was delighted
Did you have any unpleasant surprises during your stay with us? None
Do you have any other comments regarding the accommodation or service? We would return again....perhaps in a warmer time of year so that we could enjoy the pool at Il Mulinaccio. However, this time we wanted to experience the various places we had planned to visit. We left Tuscany and took the train to the south of Italy where we stayed at an amazing hotel near the village of Pisticci in Basilicata.....Hotel Torre Fiore. The entire trip was an unforgettable experience. Thank you Susan Steele and TO-Tuscany

This is a beautiful and magical place. We loved the swimming pool and have never seen such a long table. Thanks for a great holiday.
The Simonot party, France (August 2010)

Coming to your house is like stepping into a warm bath. It was better than expected and a great place to stay. Many thanks. Your welcome was special and we will cherish it as a lovely, welcoming start of a truly great time. Good vibes, positive energy. Be proud of yourselves and be proud of what you give to anyone who is privileged to stay at Il Molinaccio.
The Schuwer party, Holland (July 2010)

Your house is a ‘little paradise’. We will return.
The Mari party, France (July 2010)

The three generations of us enjouyed our stay. The house is beautiful and very well kept. The garden is spacious and relaxing. We will have many fond memories. The kids chasing white butterflies or splashing in the pool, picking our daily salad from the garden, listening to the sound of the stream in the evening and your discreet but friendly presence was very much appreciated. Thanks for everything.
 De Rougemont party (July 2010)

We couldn’t have found a more beautiful, serene and comfortable place to spend some special time with our cherished friends and family. Il Mulinaccio is a splendid place, surrounded by so much beauty and filled with great energy. Every corner is a haven – from the pool where we enjoyed lazy afternoons to the al fresco table wher we enjoyed relaxing breakfasts listening to the sounds of the creek and watching the kids chasing the butterflies. The warmth of your hospitality and your passion for this land and this place nestled in the heart of Chianti show through all the details that make Il Molinaccio very special. Thank you; we look forward to coming back soon.
The Shillito party, Australia (July 2010)

We all had a fantastic time. We thank you for owning this villa as it is a ‘smashing’ part of the world to visit.
 Stephens party, Australia (May 2010)

It was the perfect place to spend our first ‘company holiday’. Lots of great memories. Thanks. Pawelka party, Austria (May 2010)

This place is amazing and you have made us feel so welcome and at home. You’ve certainly got yourselves a fantastic place here and it is one of the few places I have traveled where I feel I’m at home. Thank you so much.
 Mitchell party, Australia (April 2010)

Thanks for helping organize such an amazing 30th for Fiona. Won’t forget this party and this place. Fantastico!
 Sainty party, England (April 2010)

Doesn’t get much better than this. The surrounding countryside just takes your breath away. How lucky you are to live here.
 The Avenells, Australia (April 2010)

Our dream come true. I loved sitting by the fire enjoying the local chianti. What more could we ask for – perfetto. Snow for Christmas – just wonderful.
 Wickham party, Australia (January 2010)

It’s wonderful to find you enjoying such a beautiful place in such a truly beautiful part of the world. No wonder you have replaced Australia with this gem – easy choice. We hope we have the pleasure of returning in the near future.
 The Rattrays (December 2009)

Congratulations on the stunning home you have created here in Gaiole. When we visited Il Molinaccio last year it was hard to believe you could make it even more beautiful but you have really added all the finishing touches. You’ve done what we’d all love to do and we can’t wait to return.
The Buntings , Australia (September 2009)

Thank you so much for letting us stay in your beautiful home. It was the perfect place for our Tuscan wedding; we wouldn’t have asked for anything more. We will always look back with the happiest of memories of our time here and hopefully one day return.
Zoe and Jon, England (October 2009)

"As a wedding planner I’m always on the look out for great venues, sadly I can’t take the credit for finding this villa as the bride and groom found it but it’s certainly one that I will recommend to future clients. The villa is the perfect setting for small intimate weddings, it has loads of great spaces to use, which is really important when choosing a venue for your wedding. Whether dining outside, by the pool or in the large dining room your guests will be guranteed maximum privacy plus all the creature comforts you expect. The villa is in a beautiful location and the photographer had a ball taking photos of the happy couple, and the personal chef who cooked the wedding breakfast was really happy with the kitchen, loads of workspace and equipment. The owners were super available to answer any questions relating to the actual wedding day. A perfect location".
Jackie Bradshaw – Marry me in Tuscany Ltd - September 2009

We have so enjoyed our stay here. Just the best place. Many thanks for our wonderful fortnight’s loan of your beautiful house. It is wonderful, a mini Paradise and we don’t want to leave this peaceful oasis. Truly ‘La Dolce Vita’. We hope very much to be back one day.
The Clark party, England Jul 2009

This is a magical, beautiful place. I had a most wonderful time relaxing, exploring the stunning surrounding area, swimming, eating and more relaxing. I can’t imagine anyone coming here and not being enchanted. A truly brilliant week.
The Thomas party, London July 2009

We had a wonderful stay at Il Mulinaccio. The house and grounds were even better than we anticipated and it was the most relaxing part of our holiday. We particularly enjoyed catching up with old friends in this great atmosphere and hopefully we will do it again.
Peter Coates AO, Sydney May 2009

Our few days at Il Mulinaccio have been full of unique moments.time to catch up and talk about the ‘good old days’. Thanks for such a wonderful experience. We now have a new base in Italy and will be back.
The Wards, Sydney May 2009

Il Mulinaccio was my dream come true. A dream for my family to come together, a dream of a lifestyle, a dream of a country and a dream of a home. I fell instantly in love when I walked into the house. It has a really good feel about it. Thank you for making our stay such a memorable one. Please prepare for our return.
The Sullivan family, Apr 2009

We just had a great time here in Il Mulinaccio. The place, the surroundings are just fantastic. Exceptional hospitality and help. We have enjoyed every minute and will come back next year.
The Weisers family, Israel April 2009

Just magnificent. Great location in Tuscany with wonderful hosts and superb R and R after busy, noisy Rome. Many thanks.
Tim Fischer, Australian Ambassador to the Vatican, Mar 2009

The accommodation was superb, comfortable. Best of all was the camaraderie, the conversations, lunches, dinners and reflection on many subjects common to us all. We had so much fun here.
The McLennans, Sydney, Jan 2009

It  took months of planning to find the right house for our family reunion. Il Mulinaccio was PERFECT. It lived up to all our expectations and some. Our Christmas together was wonderful and we spent the week together cooking, drinking local wine, walking, playing and more cooking. We ate like kings and queens all from your wonderful well stocked kitchen. The herb garden came in very habdy as did the wild rocket. We had fantastic meals together.
You have a beautiful home and we loved every minute of our stay. Thank you.
The Callisto family, Perth, Dec 2008.

We had a wonderful holiday in this fantastic house in one of the most beautiful parts of Italy. The situation and size of the house enabled us to to have the whole family together but gave us space and privacy if we wanted quiet time to think and reflect.
We will take away many happy memories of good food, wine, frosty mornings, the sun rising out of the mist, magical landscapes of vineyards, ancient buildings and old towns. I could go on and on. We hope to be back.
The Kerridge family, Cornwall, Dec 2008

Il Molinaccio is more wonderful than even the gorgeous pictures can do justice. The owners Cathy and Stephen are so welcoming and go out of their way to accommodate the whims of their guests. The property is wonderfully presented, every amenity from wireless internet to a cupboards full of Tuscan ceramic crockery are all provided. The pool is magnificent, the grounds impeccable and you really will be torn whether to stay at the house or explore Sienna or Florence or any of the myriad smaller towns that the house is so well located for. We were awfully upset when it was time to give the keys back but did so knowing we could always and would love to return
Brindan, Sydney, Australia

I went on holiday with my family and we range from 60 years to 2 years so finding a villa to suit all our needs was proving to be quite tricky. When I found your website I just felt a sense of relief

I like To Tuscany, partly because it has a tremendous range of villas, and partly because (unlike many companies) it has an excellent website that provides what you really want when choosing a villa.

Our accommodation, which cost less than £800 for the week, is in a converted stone farmhouse next to a 12th Century Franciscan chapel. There is a pergola shaded by vines round the back here we quickly settle into a rhythm of eating long pasta suppers while the shadows lengthen.
