Punta Ala

An exceptional excursion from Follonica is Punta Ala, only a few minutes by car taking Collacchie Road towards the South.
Modern and well equipped residential village with a rational tourist port, Punta Ala rises on a promontory surrounded by the sea in a wonderful position. For its sport facilities, its elegant villas and hotels which are all built respecting the natural environment, it is the most "fashionable" tourist centre of the Maremma.
In the immediate vicinities you can also visit historical cities where there are several important museums. The cities include Tarquinia, Volterra, Populonia, Vetulonia, Saturnia, Roselle, Massa Marittima, Grosseto.

Roselle archaeological site
8km along the road from Grosseto to Siena one reaches Roselle 's Archaeological Park.
Characterised by a complex archaeological stratification and surrounded by a fascinating natural environment Roselle has been called the Etruscan Pompei. It constitutes, in fact, an extremely interesting field of research insofar as it contains conspicuous remains of not only Roman and medieval urban settlements (most of the excavations up till now are related to the Roman era), but also of the Etruscan period.
Open to public from 8.30 to sunset everyday. For info, call +39 0564/402403.
Vetulonia archaeological site
The district of Castiglione della Pescaia includes the town of Vetulonia that was one of the richest and most flourishing towns of northern Etruria mentioned in important ancient literary sources. Founded in the iron age (9th century B.C.) in the Bruna valley which was undoubtedly inhabited in prehistoric times, Vetulonia was originally composed of two distinct centers which were unified in the 7th century as can be deduced from the distribution of the sunken tombs dug into the surrounding hills not far from the town.
The most typical feature of the town is that these sunken tombs are inserted into a great circle of stone, from which derives the name "tombe a circolo" ( circle tombs). The splendid and famous monumental tombs date to the 7th century and include the famous Tomba della Pietrera, which is visible along Via dei Sepolcri.
It is open all day.
