Molino a Brolio 12
Location address: Brolio - Gaiole in Chianti - Siena
Molino a Brolio 12 is a typical Tuscan villa in local stone located a short distance away from Brolio Castle. The building was originally a mill which explains its lower position at the foot of several Chianti hills which are covered with Tuscan forests.
The property is composed of three buildings, one of which has not been restored and is not accessible. Next to the main building is a low building which is used for storage. To the other side of this is the fenced pool area. There is plenty of sun on the area which is furnished with sunbeds and umbrella. Space is limited immediately around the pool edge, however space for children to play is provided by the lawned areas to the front of the property.
The villa is entered by crossing a loggia with a large terracotta arch. It is furnished with a table and chairs for 10 people. From here there is access into the main lounge of the villa. It has a large stone fireplace and the tradition terracotta arched ceiling. The spacious room is furnished with a triple, a double sofa and an armchair. Running along one wall is the original feeding trough of the farm animals.
Passing on through an arched door way there is a large dining area. It's divided into two areas with huge arch across the room. The feeding trough continues alone the full length of this room. The floor is done in antique terracotta tiles, like that of the rest of the villa. To one side of the arch is a large wooden table that comfortably seats 10 people, while the other side has a smaller table with chairs and a sideboard.
The kitchen is accessed from the lounge, this is a spacious room with a traditional stone sink providing it with plenty of local character. In the room are two fridges with separate freezer compartments. The kitchen is fully equipped and include gas hobs and oven. Double doors provide access to the garden.
From the kitchen wooden stairs lead up to a small hall. Off this is a bedroom with double bed and a high ceiling of wooden beams and terracotta tiles. In the room is a wardrobe with mirror. Immediately next to the bedroom is a small bathroom with shower.
Wooden stairs continue up to the tower bedroom which is open to the stairwell. The spacious room has a high ceiling and is furnished with a double iron bed, large wardrobe and an antique chest of drawers with mirrors. En-suite is a small bathroom with shower.
The hall below, leads into a lounge which has a large fireplace to one side. In front of the fireplace is a comfortable double sofa and an armchair. Also in the room is a table with chairs.
Off the room is covered loggia with a large arch to one side. It looks out to the front of the villa and the hills that surround the property. This area is furnished with a table with chairs and a simple sofa.
Off the back of the lounge is a short corridor. This leads to a small bathroom with shower on the left and a double bedroom on the right. The room is large with the original terracotta floor which is found throughout the villa. It is furnished with a pretty iron double bed, large wooden wardrobe, an antique chest of drawer topped with marble. This room also has a day bed which can be used should a twin bedroom be required.
At the end of the corridor is access to an apartment with two bedrooms. To the right is the first of the double bedrooms. It is a smaller room yet has plenty of light. It is furnished with a double bed, a wardrobe and a chest of drawers. There is also a day bed in the room, using this the room can be set up as a twin. Next to this is a bathroom with tub and overhead shower.
Across the corridor and up some steps is another double bedroom. This is a wonderfully large and spacious room which has a double wooden wardrobe and a marble topped chest of drawers. Off the room is a bathroom with shower.
From this room there are stairs down to the small living area. The room is full of character with exposed stone walls, the original terracotta floor and traditional ceiling of wooden beams and terracotta tiles. The furnishings are completed by a wooden table with chairs and a double sofa. Glass and wood doors provide access to the garden.
From the main lounge doors provide access to this room which has exposed stone walls and is furnished with a double sofa, the ground floor allows a second access directly to the garden. Steep wooden stairs lead up to the bedroom above.
From the first floor lounge there is access to the last bedroom. This is also a double room with en-suite bathroom with tub and overhead shower. The room is furnished with a chest of drawers, a sofa and a wardrobe.
4 double bedrooms with two single mattresses but beds cannot be divided.
2 double bedrooms which can be set up as twins if requested when booking.
Although the third, unrestored, building is closed some care must be taken with children around it.

Internet WI-FI available in the villa for free. Please bring your own laptop.
The nearest restaurant is about 2.5km away. It's possible to walk to it although there is no sidewalk or lighting on the road so care must be taken.

Pros The old molino about 2 km from Brolio castle has been recently refurbished by the owner's family which means each bedroom has a bathroom and the beds and mattresses are renewed, the make-over which took the family six months to complete includes a restoration of the old terracotta floor tiles and beams that were treated to bring out the best in their character, the ground floor has been opened up and now offers a huge open space for guest to meet and dine, the kitchen has been equipped for up to 14 guests.
Guests will appreciate the amount of space the property offers with its reading room, games room and loggias. Riccadro the owner is proud of his work at the molino and looks forward to meeting his guests.
Cons The kitchen is a little dark.
Local attractions The Brolio Castle which offers wine tastings, a restaurant and a tour of the old castle www.ricasoli.it Lecchi in Chianti, Gaiole in Chianti and Radda in Chianti are beautiful villages to explore with Siena and Florence accessible for day trips.

I like To Tuscany, partly because it has a tremendous range of villas, and partly because (unlike many companies) it has an excellent website that provides what you really want when choosing a villa.

Our accommodation, which cost less than £800 for the week, is in a converted stone farmhouse next to a 12th Century Franciscan chapel. There is a pergola shaded by vines round the back here we quickly settle into a rhythm of eating long pasta suppers while the shadows lengthen.
