Molino a Brolio is a typical Tuscan villa in local stone located a short distance away from Brolio Castle. The building was originally a mill which explains its lower position at the foot of several Chianti hills which are covered with Tuscan forests.
The property is composed of three buildings, one of which has not been restored and is not accessible. Next to the main building is a low building which is used for storage. To the other side of this is the fenced pool area. There is plenty of sun on the area which is furnished with sunbeds and umbrella. Space is limited immediately around the pool edge, however space for children to play is provided by the lawned areas to the front of the property.
The villa is entered by crossing a loggia with a large terracotta arch. It is furnished with a table and chairs for 10 people. From here there is access into the main lounge of the villa. It has a large stone fireplace and the tradition terracotta arched ceiling. The spacious room is furnished with a triple, a double sofa and an armchair. Running along one wall is the original feeding trough of the farm animals.
Passing on through an arched door way there is a large dining area. It's divided into two areas with huge arch across the room. The feeding trough continues alone the full length of this room. The floor is done in antique terracotta tiles, like that of the rest of the villa. To one side of the arch is a large wooden table that comfortably seats 10 people, while the other side has a smaller table with chairs and a sideboard.
The kitchen is accessed from the lounge, this is a spacious room with a traditional stone sink providing it with plenty of local character. In the room are two fridges with separate freezer compartments. The kitchen is fully equipped and include gas hobs and oven. Double doors provide access to the garden.
From the kitchen wooden stairs lead up to a small hall. Off this is a bedroom with double bed and a high ceiling of wooden beams and terracotta tiles. In the room is a wardrobe with mirror. Immediately next to the bedroom is a small bathroom with shower.
Wooden stairs continue up to the tower bedroom which is open to the stairwell. The spacious room has a high ceiling and is furnished with a double iron bed, large wardrobe and an antique chest of drawers with mirrors. En-suite is a small bathroom with shower.
The hall below, leads into a lounge which has a large fireplace to one side. In front of the fireplace is a comfortable double sofa and an armchair. Also in the room is a table with chairs.
Off the room is covered loggia with a large arch to one side. It looks out to the front of the villa and the hills that surround the property. This area is furnished with a table with chairs and a simple sofa.
Off the back of the lounge is a short corridor. This leads to a small bathroom with shower on the left and a double bedroom on the right. The room is large with the original terracotta floor which is found throughout the villa. It is furnished with a pretty iron double bed, large wooden wardrobe, an antique chest of drawer topped with marble. This room also has a day bed which can be used should a twin bedroom be required.
From the main lounge doors provide access to this room which has exposed stone walls and is furnished with a double sofa, the ground floor allows a second access directly to the garden. Steep wooden stairs lead up to the bedroom above.
From the first floor lounge there is access to the last bedroom. This is also a double room with en-suite bathroom with tub and overhead shower. The room is furnished with a chest of drawers, a sofa and a wardrobe.
3 double bedrooms with two single mattresses but beds cannot be divided.
1 double bedroom which can be set up as twins if requested when booking.
Although the third, unrestored, building is closed some care must be taken with children around it.

Internet WI-FI available in the villa for free. Please bring your own laptop.
The nearest restaurant is about 2.5km away. It's possible to walk to it although there is no sidewalk or lighting on the road so care must be taken.

Pool Info

The pool is located in a small fenced area immediately behind the old pig sty which is now used as a store-room. It has plenty of sun with some shade provided by the building, the cypress trees and a couple of umbrellas. The pool area is paved in terracotta and dotted with several sunbeds.
It is a lovely private area, ideal to relax while enjoying a glass of Chianti wine and admiring the simple views of the surrounding hills that are covered with forests.
The pool is 10x4 metres and 1.2 metres deep. It's open from May to October, weather permitting.

Pros The space, the solitude, the wildlife - families of wild boar visiting the meadow each evening, together with deer - the swallows in an out of an outbuilding, the raptors crisscrossing the skies, all added up to an excellent family holiday with plenty of space in an extraordinary villa.
Local attractions We mostly ate at the villa, but one evening meal at La Grotta della Rana, Localita San Sano, was memorable and good value.

Pros What not to like. Location was perfect for exploring all of Tuscany as well as making day trips to Pisa, Florence, Rome, and Venice. Also close to Gaiole in Chianti (a lovely town a few kilometers away) where we were able to purchase food and other supplies. The villa location out in the countryside also provided peaceful setting and privacy. The pool was also inviting. Unfortunately, during our visit in late May the temperature was a little too cool to use it. We also could not have asked for a better owner - Riccardo. He was very attentive to our needs and went out of his way to provide assistance on several occasions that proved critical to our stay. A fantastic person. The historic complex dating back to 1030 - yes I said 1030. It was a delight.
Cons The following is meant as constructive criticism and suggested improvements that could be made to make the villa more comfortable. Replace the beds with something more comfortable. Increase the shower water pressure and provide a more efficient means to heat the shower water (not sure these improvements can be made easily because of the age of the facility). We all adjusted and loved the villa and its location.
Local attractions Our itinerary Tour of Tuscany 2015 Headquarters - Il Molino a Brolio 8, Gaiole in Chianti Spots/towns we visited: Firenze - Academia with David and Ufizzi Valdarno - departure from Autostrada Montevarchi - larger town by Valdarno Castello di Brolio - home of Baron Ricasole Barbischio - ancient fortified village outside of Gaiole Radda in Chianti - center of shopping and great restaurants Siena - Il Campo, Duomo and the dentist Pienza - cheese capital Montepulciano - #2 restaurant on the trip, beautiful tower and views at the top Castiglione del Lago - charming old town on the Lago Trasimeno in Umbria Cortona - hill town above the Valdichiana plains - San Francesco artifacts Panzano - on the way to Greve, wineries, turn off to San Casciano Greve in Chianti - wine center, great Sunday marketplace Castellina in Chianti - quaint hill town we passed through many times, but only stopped once, Archeological museum Pisa - leaning tower San Gimignano - busy tourist town, lots of shopping Mercatale in Val di Pesa - commercial town on the way to San Casciano San Casciano - largest of the Chianti towns, great views from the park Badia di Cultibuono - abbey outside of Gaiole, great wine, final dinner Rome (day trip with tour guide from Siena) Venice and Verona (three day trip on our own) We enjoyed every location and still did not get to see all of the Tuscan attractions. The pasta and wine were to die for. Fantastic!

Pros Very peaceful & tranquil. Also very spacious.
Good position to visit many sights in a tuscany.
Cons A bit remote & drive up & down to property very steep. A bit of a scramble to pull out onto road as so bumpy & in need of some repair Also many flys around the property. The pool was also in need of attention as although cleaned whilst we were there, lots of worms, bugs etc climb in & end up on bottom of pool. Not pleasant to use because of this. Shame there's no cover to pull over when not in use! The exterior patio also a bit weedy & ladder into pool a bit loose.
Local attractions Castle mini tour very good. Fantastic views. Wine tour a bit disappointing. Didn't eat at restaurant but menu looked very nice. Gaiole had a nice ambience & we had too good meals. One at the pizzeria in town centre main square on our first day & another overlooking the stream parallel to main road through town. Sorry dont have names to hand. For a special meal with spectacular views try the restaurant at Badia a Coltibuono Abbey. Delicious!!

Unfortunately, there were an extraordinary amount of insects in the area due to the weather conditions. The owner tried their best to resolve this by cleaning the pool several times during the week. The ladder has been checked and is safe.

Pros Beautiful house with lots of space and a marvellous kitchen. Complete privacy as the nearest neighbour is probably 1km away, at least. Location in the heart of Chianti, near Castello di Brolio and with supermarket, open air markets and other conveniences at a reasonable distance. A perfect vacation!
Cons The only thing, a minor issue, is the smell that at times comes from what appears to be the sewers near the table outside the kitchen. After a few days we moved a table nearer the front entrance for meals, and did no longer feel the smell.
Local attractions Castello di Brolio, excellent wine shop with all their wines and other produce, and the great restaurant. All the vineyards where you can try and buy wine, e.g. San Felice, Castello di Bossi etc. etc. Volpaia. The shops in Greve in Chianti, especially the fruits and vegetables shop, run by two elderly gentlemen. Look out for local markets, one every day somewhere not toonfar from the house (driving).

Pros The villa is realy large and comfortable with specific Tuscan atmosphere, situated in a peaceful place. There is a plenty of space to play outside, additionally our children were delighted the pool. The kitchen is equipped quite well.
The owner was friendly and helpful :-)
Cons The road leading to the house needs to be improved.

Pros The house is rustic but beautiful. The location is incredible with wonderful views. Ricardo and his family were wonderful upon check in and during the week when we had questions. Very attentive to our needs. A great experience. It's like living in a castle.
Cons The steep driveway needs some work.
Local attractions A few nice casual restaurants in Gaioli in Chianti where they had great pizza and great service. There is a high end restaurant in one of the hotel villa's up the hill from Gaioli in Chianti. Highly recommend having at least one meal cooked in the Villa by Andrea from a catering company called Il Fiasco. Don't let the name fool you, his meals were incredible and reasonably priced. For those of you driving to the location I HIGHLY recommend a GPS. I used a Tom Tom Italy App on my iPhone. I just plugged in the GPS coordinates and it took me to the front door.

Pros - huge and old, feels more like a baronial castle than a villa!
- the large first floor balcony (ideal for meals)
- the top floor en-suite bedroom
- lots of space inside and out, perfect for extended family/friends
- completely private - we had been concerned that the '8' meant that it was part of a group of properties but it is quite on its own
- everything worked (including the wifi internet)
- the photos don't really do the property justice!
Cons - bugs (crickets and of course mosquitoes), but this is the Italian countryside in the summer - occasionally a smell outside the kitchen (so we generally sat elsewhere - plenty of alternatives!) - the 'gardens' are somewhere between a tended and a natural state... - all outings really require a car
Local attractions - the castle at Brolio is well worth visiting, we just went round the exterior (potentially hazardous for children though, at one point there is a small wall they might want to walk on with a very big drop on the other side...) Back in La Madonna you also get to sample the estate wine (Ricasoli) at the very grand Vente Diretto shop. - San Regolo (5 minutes drive) has a little shop which also serves coffee - Lecchi (10-12 minutes) has a better-stocked shop, a wine bar/cafe and a good restaurant - Radda (15-20 minutes) is beautiful and has lots of restaurants, a good grocers (La Casa Porciatti) and a good Coop supermarket (and is better in every way than Gaiole) - Siena (40 minutes) is well worth the excursion. La Pizzeria di Nonno Mede recommended for lunch - good food, value & views (c.7 minutes walk from centre)

Pros The old molino about 2 km from Brolio castle has been recently refurbished by the owner's family which means each bedroom has a bathroom and the beds and mattresses are renewed, the make-over which took the family six months to complete includes a restoration of the old terracotta floor tiles and beams that were treated to bring out the best in their character, the ground floor has been opened up and now offers a huge open space for guest to meet and dine, the kitchen has been equipped for up to 14 guests.

Guests will appreciate the amount of space the property offers with its reading room and loggias. Riccadro the owner is proud of his work at the molino and looks forward to meeting his guests.
Cons The kitchen is a little dark.
Local attractions The Brolio Castle which offers wine tastings, a restaurant and a tour of the old castle www.ricasoli.it Lecchi in Chianti, Gaiole in Chianti and Radda in Chianti are beautiful villages to explore with Siena and Florence accessible for day trips.
