Quercialaia is a wonderfully rustic cottage located 4km from Siena with great access to the city via public transport. In its carefully restored glory it sits on the edge of a small sleepy hamlet, from where it has wonderful views of the Tuscan hills. The private garden has a well maintained English lawn and sun chairs.

There is a large infinity pool with hydromassage and superb views below the cottage. Next to the pool there is a small enclave ideal for preparing light meals to enjoy by the poolside. The retaining walls around the pool area are in old terracotta giving a warm and friendly ambience.

The cottage is on 2 floors. You enter into a lounge that has a sofa bed. In this room there is also a dining room table. On the right of the room there are 2 arches which lead into the kitchen area. The fully equipped kitchen has an antique stone sink.

From the lounge elegant travertine steps lead up to the bedroom. This room has characteristic wooden beams and terracotta tiles on the ceiling. Doors lead out onto a small balcony from where you have a beautiful view of the valley below and hills beyond. There is a small bathroom with an open shower, similar to a wet room.

We have included this property in the private pool section although the owner's family may make occasional use of the pool. The pool is at a lower level than the cottage and hamlet, therefore it can be seen by the neighbours.

In the cottage there is an airconditioning unit in the bedroom. The use is free of charge.
The garden is automatically irrigated in the mornings.

Internet WI-FI available in the villa for free. Please bring your own laptop.

Pool Info

The infinity pool is a on the slope below the house. From it there are wonderful views of the valley below the property and the field covered hills beyond. At one end there is a hydromassage which can sooth away all the stress of a day of sight seeing.

The pool uses a salt-water electrolysis system, which, as well as requiring little maintenance, is very good for the skin as it remains clorine free. There is sun on the pool and surrounding area most of the day.
The pool is 10 x 5.5m and open from June to September.

Pros This villa has a good location in that it is in a quiet area to one side of Siena, but yet with easy access to Siena itself, and local transport links (a dual carriage being very close for getting to much of Tuscany). There is a bus for Siena that goes from just over the main road direct to the centre.

The villa was clean inside, and for 2 people had good space allowance. The kitchen has all utensils you may need, and having a dishwasher is a definite bonus. You can park a car easily near the villa too. Garden was very neat and tidy and looked after. We sat and read in the garden a few times and it was very pleasant.
Cons The bathroom was not great because of the design and in particular, the shower. If you are used to wet rooms, this may be ok but we weren't, and we just found it got dirty very quickly and everything was wet from using the shower. If you are 5ft10 (178cm) like me, you may also find some difficulties as there are low roofs in the bathroom, but also the bed is not full size and if you sleep straight, this can be an issue. We did have lots of ants everywhere too, but that was noted in many other reviews, and be wary to take some form of bug spray to avoid being bitten. Mosquito nets (as mentioned in other reviews) would be a real bonus to this villa. Make sure food is put away in storage. The pool looks very nice but it was also very cold and ants all around the surrounds - we only used it twice during our visit (even when the sun is out).
Local attractions Nice restaurants in Siena. Lots of small hillside towns and villages at most 1 hour from it (Montepulciano was our favourite).

The bathroom has an open shower - which is a little like a wet room. Thank you for telling us about the problems with ants - the owner has applied a treatment which has now dispelled them.

Pros The pool being private and fairly clean.
The garden was well taken care of, with barbecue tools ready.
A/C in the bedroom.
Dishwasher.
Cons Too many mosquitos and no insect net on the windows. Bathroom was too narrow and there was no shower cabin- the whole bathroom got soaked every shower time. Towels provided were dirty- blood stains on them!!! Kitchen utensils were too old & worn.
Local attractions Menchetti- the best pizza! Bakery shop next to the laundry shop on the way to Coop nearby. Small supermarket close to Arbia station- open on Sundays and has lovely pesto sauce and good wine (1.45 euro / bottle!!)

To Tuscany recently visited the villa and the owner. The kitchen equipment has been replaced and replenished with what was needed. The bathroom is small(180cms high)but it is in keeping with the character of the house. It has an open shower - a little like a wet room but the owner has fitted a divider to contain the spray as much as possible. The owner was unhappy to hear about the poor standard of towels and has ensured they have been checked and are all now of good quality. They would like to ensure clients that they are on hand to help with anything.

Pros The pool is excellent, and the house really nice and rustic. Claudio and Jacopo were very helpful.
Local attractions We only ate out in Siena, the best restaurant by far was La Taverna di San Giuseppe on via Giuvanni Dupre , 2 mins walk off the main piazza del campo. Piazza del Campo is great to people watch, but be prepared to pay big for a drink or meal. The view from the Duomo tower is great, but expect a long queue in high season.

Pros The location was beautiful and easily accessible. You do not need a car if you stay here as it's well served by the Siena city bus line (#5) and has a grocery store withing walking distance if you do not want to go into Siena too frequently. The property, garden/patio area, and pool were all beautiful and the view was superb.

The kitchen area was also nice and having free on-site laundry was very convenient.

All in all, it was a beautiful slice of Tuscan living without too much hassle or confusion for people unfamiliar with the area.
Cons The plumbing left a lot to be desired. There were also problems with bugs. It's semi-rural so that's expected to some degree, but there were large amounts of ants present most of the time in the kitchen area. Also, it's not really a "private" pool. While there are no other renters to share it with, the owners use it frequently themselves. They usually stay out of the way when you're around, but they had one family get-together during our stay where little kids were using the pool all day. That being said, the owners live in Siena and just use the property as a out-of-town vacation spot when they're not renting so they're not hovering over you all of the time (their grandmother does live right below the villa on the hillside though).
Local attractions The town of Taverne d'Arbia is small and doesn't offer much, but there is a Coop grocery store right down the street from the property. However, Siena is a 10-min drive away and the #5 bus has a stop on the main street outside of the hillside-area that the villa is on so it's very easy to get into town and experience everything there.

Pros The scenery from the back patio; the quaintness of the villa's interior; the friendliness of the proprietors (Claudio and his mother Fernanda); the location in terms of day trips; the convenience of purchasing foodstuffs in the Co-Op in the village of Taverne d'Arbia.
Cons No instructions as to how to use the washing machine; no candles on site (we had a power outage the first day, due to a heavy storm); no way to wash/change towels (we were there ten days and could have used a linen service); shower arrangement in bathroom a bit awkward.
Local attractions Art gallery/studio of Jan Praet in Panzano == wonderful sculptor; Galleria J in San Gimignano -- lovely jewelry; Fattoria Le Fonti for wine tasting in Panzano; Bottega di Lornano -- yummy ristorante and enoteca northeast of Siena; Osteria del Carcere -- great local cuisine in San Gimignano; Il Locale di Guido in Taverne d'Arbia -- great, inexpensive pizza and local food (just southeast of Siena)

Pros This villa had beautiful views over the Tuscan hills and was very quiet. There is a coop conveniently located a 10 minute walk away, and there is a train station 1 mile away that takes 10 minutes to get to Siena.
Cons Its on 3 levels.Villa & garden on top.UNDER the garden are 2 rooms the owners dad LIVES IN, then below that is the pool.So Awkward using pool which is overlooked & used as a path to allotments below.Garden has wasps in the day, & mosquitos at night.Village is modern & not attractive
Local attractions Siena had the nearest restaurants and attractions - 17 Euros in a taxi. Its a beautiful place & where we spend most of our time due to villa garden and pool. Also check out Lake Trasimeno - beautiful sleepy village & lake 1 hour away by car

Pros It's a very quiet and rural setting. The pool is perfect, the family do use it most days but accept its your space and soon move if you arrive and want to use it. The local supermarket is within a mile and is well stocked. Its close enough to the main roads that you can get about easily and sienna is very easy to get to. Ideal for a family with one child
and would suit a couple very well. If you want access to real Italy without tourists is surrounded by small villages in true Italian landscape.
Cons The bathroom was very tight for anyone over 5'10' tall (I banged my head a few times) and the shower was rather simple and the head to low but it was hardly an issue. The pull out sofa bed was not at all comfortable and we resorted to buying an air bed for our child but it was clearly stated it was just a sofa bed so that's fair enough.
Local attractions Voltera was very nice with some good restaurants, Sienna is touristy but interesting with many places to eat though pricey which is to be expected especially in the main square.

Pros - Ruhige Lage in keiner Touristenumgebung, völlig abgeschieden
- Sehr nette Besitzer, Sohn spricht Englisch
