Castellina in Chianti is a small town nestled at the top of a rolling green hill that separates the Pesa and Staggia rivers. From here you have a wonderful view of the surrounding landscape and the beautiful countryside.

Castellina origins
Castellina in Chianti has historic and noble origins. In the 13th century it was built on a high ridge, probably over Roman ruins. There must have been a castle with two doors and a single road which all of the houses faced. The name Castellina in Chianti dei Trebbiesi, in honor of a nearby noble family, is tied to the civil history of Florence and the religious history of Fiesole.
 It was part of the Chianti League and given its position near the border with Siena it was of great strategic importance. It has a 14th- 15th century character with a number of religious structures, including the parocchial church of San Salvatore.

The hamlet of Castellina
The fortress and observation deck date back to the medieval as does the Via delle Volte, a road used originally for military purposes, from which there is a unique view of Chianti.
You can visit several Etruscan tombs and it is believed that the area around Castellina in Chianti was full of numerous settlements of this population which, even today,is considered quite mysterious.

Principle activity
Today, Castellina's principle activity is, besides tourism, the production of wine and several important wine producers are located here.

Antica Gelateria

There is an excellent ice cream shop in Castellina. It is in a beautiful room in an old building, while you eat your icecream you can admire the high vaulted ceilings.
The icecream is all homemade and presented with elegance. The antica gelateria is famous in the whole of the Chianti for its fresh and delicious icecreams.

Sabrina's Alimentari or grocery store in Castellina in Chianti is typical of the Chianti area.
Sabrina stocks almost everything you could need during your stay in the Chianti, there is a friendly atmosphere and more often than not you are asked to taste from the provisions counter before you buy.
Sabrina stocks a large selection of wine from the local area at reasonable prices and if you fancy a sandwich at lunch time Sabrina's are second to none!

Petrol - There is a Shell Station out of town that operates a 24 hour machine service, you will need a 20 or 50 Euro note when they are closed. Open Monday to Saturday 07.30/12.30 and 15.30/19.30

Market - There is a small market in Castellina on Saturday morning.

Banks - There are 3 banks in Castellina with cash dispensers that accept Credit Cards.

Mass 
There is a church in Castellina.
There is a Mass on Saturday evening at 18.00 and on Sunday at 08.00, 11.00 & 18.00

Butcher - Macelleria Stiacchini
Castellina has it's own typical Italian butchery. Here you can obtain excellent meat. If what you are looking for is not in the display just ask for it, Riccardo, the butcher, will be happy to get it for you from his fridges. Also to one side of the butchery there is a wonderful selection of cold Tuscan meats made by Riccardo. It is an excellent place to get a good sandwhich.
An item prepared by Riccardo and not to be missed are the truffle sausages. Riccardo is also happy to give you some suggestions for cooking the meat you have selected.

The old Pestello specialises in the famous Tuscan grill.   
Amid the warm and familiar atmosphere guests can enjoy pure home cooking with a wide selection of fine wines, that can be tasted and purchased in the restaurant's own wine cellar.
The Pestello has nobile origins from the 19th century. The characteristic rooms were converted from an old stable. It still maintains the old atmosphere.
There is a terrace, that in the summer is perfect for a romantic dinner.
