Vecchia Fornace

Vecchia Fornace is wonderful Tuscan villa located in the heart of the Chianti about half way between Siena and Gaiole in Chianti. The villa has an artistic style in the decor and attached to it on the large, well maintained property there is an extensive art gallery, across the road is a sculpture park.
The large pool is located at the end of the pretty garden, passing two large artistic peppers. It is a lovely area with incredible views of the Chianti hills from the sunbeds and the pergola.
Outside the villa, looking over the lawns onto the pool and beyond onto the rolling Tuscan hills is a large covered terrace. It is a cool area to enjoy meals outdoors during the warm Tuscan days and evenings. There is a large wooden table with six chairs.
The villa is accessed from a small hall off which there is a spacious kitchen and a terracotta arch which leads into the living area. The entire ground floor is paved with polished wooden floors giving the villa a fantastic warm feel and setting off the terracotta tiles of the ceiling. The kitchen is in tradition Tuscan style with stone built cupboards with wooden doors. It is well equipped and includes an eye-level oven, gas hobs and a fridge with separate freezer.
Passing through a second terracotta arch from the kitchen there is the large, bright living room. Between this and the kitchen is also an open fireplace which can be accessed from both rooms. To one side of the room is a large dining table with six chairs.
While the other side of the room is a comfortable sitting area with a double sofa and a modern armchair in the shape of a hand. The ceiling has the original vaults from when the villa was used as a brick furnace. Two large glass doors provide access to the terrace and garden.
At the back of the room is a door to the ground floor sleeping area. This leads into a small hall of which there is a bathroom with shower. At the end of the hall is a double bedroom which can be converted into a twin on request. This spacious room has a three door wardrobe, wooden chair and pouf.
The second bedroom is also off the hall, this is the master bedroom. It is furnished in cool blue colours that offset the wooden floors and terracotta of the ceiling. There is a pretty double bed, wooden chair, pouf and wardrobe with shelves and hanging space. The large window looks out onto the garden and the views over the pool. En-suite is a spacious bathroom with a tub which has a hand-held shower.
The final bedroom is on the first floor. It is accessed only externally, from the garden overlooking the pool. There is a long flight of low iron steps which lead up to this delightful room. On entering to the right is a small dressing room with double door wardrobe and a bathroom with shower.
The room itself if bright and spacious. It, like the rest of the villa, has polished a wooden floor and the traditional Tuscan ceiling of wooden beams and terracotta tiles. In the room is a comfortable double sofa-bed. To one side is a cupboard with various cooking utensils and crockery, in front of this is a table that can seat four. While to the other side of the room is a tiny kitchen unit hidden within a cupboard, it is only suitable to do simple snacks and drinks.
Due to the art gallery on the grounds there will be other people around and the villa, gardens and pool are not completely private as they can be seen.

Pool Info
The pool is located at the end of the well maintained garden. It has full sun and is surrounded by a lovely lawn and a pretty terracotta sun deck dotted with comfortable sun beds. From the pool area there are stunning views of the Chianti hills and valleys, dotted with villas, stone villages and wine estates.
To one side is a wonderful pergola which provides welcoming shade to a couple of tables and chairs from where one can admire the hills covered with olive groves, vineyards and forests. Roman steps go into the cooling waters of the infinity pool.
The pool is 16x7 metres, 1.5-3 metres deep and it is open from April to October, weather permitting.

Nearest town
The nearest village is Vagliagli which is about 5km away. Here there is a small grocery and a restaurant. In Gaiole in Chianti which is about a 20minute drive there are all amenities and a larger supermarket. Otherwise Siena has several large supermarkets and a wide selection of shops, restaurants and other amenities, it is about a 30 minute drive away.

Our accommodation, which cost less than £800 for the week, is in a converted stone farmhouse next to a 12th Century Franciscan chapel. There is a pergola shaded by vines round the back here we quickly settle into a rhythm of eating long pasta suppers while the shadows lengthen.
