Villa Duccio is located in the Selva National Park of Tuscany. The position of the villa ensures a peaceful location with enviable views of the beautiful woodland scenery surrounding it. The Villa has been restored using as many of the original materials as possible to retain the ancient style without sacrificing modern comfort and convenience. There are 5 bedrooms, each with en-suite bathrooms; the villa comfortably sleeps 10. The owners live approximately 25 metres away from the main house in the converted hay barn; they look forward to being helpful but are completely respectful of your privacy.
The large swimming pool is located on the east side of the property within the beautiful gardens of the Villa. There is a terracotta patio area surrounding the pool on three sides with sun loungers and umbrellas and a low wall on two sides. Terracotta pots filled with rosemary, and old fashioned olive oil containers ("orci") decorate the east edge of the swimming pool.
Dating back to the 17th Century, Villa Duccio was originally a dwelling for sharecroppers of a feudal landowner. The nearest town is Casole d’Elsa which was the scene of much fighting between the Dukedoms of Siena and Florence and, until the 18th Century was under the rule of the famous Medici Dukes of Florence. Today the Villa and the area is part of the province of Siena (35km away).
Villa Duccio is arranged over two floors with a further mezzanine level at one end of the property. The rooms all have high ceilings and there are many windows and ‘french doors’. There are steps throughout the property to reach the various rooms and bedrooms. All bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms, mosquito screens on the windows and ceiling fans. A covered patio is directly outside the kitchen door; it is equipped with a very large, chocolate travertine table and chairs for al fresco eating. The Villa is a perfect retreat for families or groups of friends looking for a convenient countryside location in Tuscany.
The ground floor entrance leads you directly in to the large lounge area with double height, beamed ceiling and terracotta tiled floor. The high ceiling and large windows give the room a spacious and bright feel. Your eyes are drawn to the large fireplace with brick arches on either side; comfortable sofas and chairs are arranged within the room to make the most of the features and space. There is also a writing desk, chair and coat stand in the lounge.
To the left of the entrance door and living room is the cloakroom with toilet, basin and washing machine. Also off this area, is a double bedroom with en-suite bathroom with toilet, bath with over-head shower and a separate shower cubicle.
Passing through the brick arches of the lounge, you enter the well-equipped, modern, professional-style kitchen. Wall cupboards, large drawers and a built in oven and dishwasher complete one wall, a large American style fridge-freezer is to the side and there is a professional style ‘island’ unit with a 5-gas hob, preparation area and 8 high stools surrounding it. There is a microwave and coffee maker too.
To the rear of the kitchen are the stairs down to the dining room which has a traditional, beamed ceiling, terracotta floor, antique wooden dining table and chairs and two antique dressers.
Up some stairs from the kitchen landing is the mezzanine bedroom with twin/double bedroom and en-suite bathroom with toilet and shower. Continuing up the stairs leads to two further twin/double bedrooms; the first has its en suite bathroom with large shower stall, basin and toilet; the second with tub, overhead shower, bidet, toilet and basin. Both rooms have iron framed twin beds, wooden chests of drawers and seating.
The stairs to the rear of the lounge area lead to another bedroom (with double bed) and a chair placed near the window. The en-suite bathroom is equipped with toilet, double sink, bidet and a large shower cubicle.
There is also a study on this level equipped with satellite TV, DVD player, CD player with MP3 docking stereo, desk and chair (bring your own computer), internet access and a tel-fax-answering machine.
Three of the bedrooms can be prepared with twin beds or made up as a double bed according to your requirements.
Hairdryers in every bathroom
The sweeping driveway of the villa has ample parking and leads you directly to the entrance of the villa.
The owners are very helpful and speak fluent English, Italian, French and some German.

Pool Info
The swimming pool is located in the beautifully landscaped gardens of the villa and is reached by a few steps leading down from the furnished patio. The surrounds of the pool are tiled; sun loungers and umbrellas are provided.
The swimming pool is 14.5 metres by 5 metres. The depth ranges from 1.2 to 1.5 meters. It is open from May 15 to September 30.
Special efforts were made to make this an ecologically sound facility. A technologically advanced water purification and recycling system is in place and low consumption light bulbs are used throughout. To further ensure water conservation all toilets are equipped with two flushers. Extensive landscaping has been used to ensure that ecological theme is continued throughout the gardens and patios.

The nearest town is Casole d’Elsa which is 8km away; it has grocery stores, a supermarket, chemist, church, bank with ATM and restaurants (see the information book located within the house for more details of local restaurants).

Our accommodation, which cost less than £800 for the week, is in a converted stone farmhouse next to a 12th Century Franciscan chapel. There is a pergola shaded by vines round the back here we quickly settle into a rhythm of eating long pasta suppers while the shadows lengthen.
