Camelia, Sant'Andrea in Caprile - Capannori - Lucca

2 bedrooms 1 bathroom 4 people Private Pool 4,5 - Excellent - Excellent 4,5

An apartment on the ground floor of an imposing Tuscan villa, Camelia is a lovely rural bolthole for a small family wanting a peaceful location and private pool, but with plenty to do nearby. Set in the hills with distant views overlooking the walled city of Lucca. Young children will love Pinocchio Park, in Collodi, and there’s more fun to be had at the beach at Viareggio. Active families will also enjoy exploring the area on foot or by bike.

But lazy days should be on the agenda, too. The welcoming, cosy apartment is decorated in a contemporary cottage-style, with original features such as terracotta columns, floors and beamed ceilings. The large pool, set in a private area of the garden, is the place to kick back on a sunbed while the kids splash about, then retreat to the poolside cabana for a lunch in the shade. Outdoor dining is also possible in the furnished gazebo just outside the villa – a bonus for guests with younger children. As the sun dips they can relax and take in the views of the valley, perhaps with a glass of the estate’s own wine in hand.

Our Thoughts
We love this little villa apartment with its traditional country style and contemporary twists. And it’s an ideal holiday home for a small family, with children. The huge pool and gardens offer plenty of space to play and relax in, while the villa is a comfy retreat from the searing sun or a chillier evening.

Two bedrooms. One bathroom. The property is fenced. The owners live on the first floor of the building and their young family occasionally use the pool. There is a well-behaved dog on-site, which is free to roam the gardens.

Ground Floor

The large salt-cleansed pool is a short distance from the villa in a private area of the garden and is set in a tiled sun deck with lawned surround. The water is accessed by metal steps, there is a Jacuzzi in one corner of the shallow end and a diving board at the deep end. The pool is 6x12 metres and 1.4 to 3 metres deep. It's open from May to September, weather permitting. The owners and their young family will occasionally use the pool.

This is a wonderful place to stay with loads of space and a very traditional pool. Marzia and the family, who live on the two floors above, were very discrete throughout our two week stay but were always on hand if we needed anything and were very helpful. The pool is amazing. There was the odd wasp and horse fly but apart from that the pool area is perfect, with wonderful views. The roads in the area are narrow and winding so I'd recommend a compact car. Overall Camelia is a highly recommended base for a Tuscan holiday.
Local attractions Cycling around the old city walls at Lucca. All the north and mid Tuscan favourites are accessible for day trips, as is the cinque terre.
