Casafoso is a lovely, traditional Tuscan villa within walking distance to Radda in Chianti. It's a cute little cottage on two floors located on a larger property, next to the owner's villa.
The pool is to the other side of the owner's villa and a short walk through the pretty garden away from Casafoso. Outside the villa is a stone paved terrace which is furnished with a table and chairs to dine al fresco. It is shaded by the nearby trees, although does have sun part of the day.
Inside is an open plan room over two floors. The lower level has a comfortable double sofa to one side, while the wooden dining table is in one corner with a wooden bench along the wall and three chairs. The entire room is paved with the traditional terracotta.
The kitchen unit is along the wall below the stairs. It is simply equipped and includes an oven, gas hobs and a small fridge with tiny internal ice box. Next to this is a fireplace, which is ideal for the cooler nights. To the back of the room is a small bathroom which has an open shower with curtain.
The sleeping area is on the mezzanine floor on the upper level. It has a beautiful iron double bed, a two seater sofa and a large wardrobe. The room has the typical Tuscan villa feature of a ceiling of wooden beams and terracotta Tiles.
Note that there is no heating in the villa.
The owners may make occasional use of the pool.
The last weekend of August there is a village festival which has live music that can be heard at the villa.

Pool Info

The pool is located to the back of the property, it has a pretty flag stone surround dotted with sun beds and some chairs. To one side is an umbrella for shade. Around the pool is a simple garden with well maintained lawns, dotted with olive trees.
The gently sloping hills provides the pool with a pretty view of the olive groves and vineyards around the property and onto the forested hills to the other side.
The pool is 14x7 metres and 0.9-1.6metres deep. It's open from mid-May to mid-September, weather permitting.

Well positioned villa, close to attractive little town. Beautiful pool. Villa fittings and fixtures were a bit 'tired' and the bathroom was very cramped. No welcome pack or w/up liquid, clean dishcloth etc, which was disappointing.
Local attractions Lovely cafe opposite town square and nice restaurant at other end of town but we can't remember their names!

Thank you for your review. The owner is sorry to hear the mattress was not as you would have preferred. It is a memory foam mattress and was purchased in 2015. Due to the size of the villa, there is no scope to make the bathroom any bigger. There was an issue with the internet but once the owner was informed it was resolved.

The hosts were friendly and welcoming and despite living next door we did not feel that our privacy or space was intruded upon.

The living areas were homely, clean and the kitchen was equipped with everything we needed.

The wet room and toilet were very cramped and required modernising but were as described and this did not detract from the overall charm of the accommodation which was set back into the bedrock, and incorporated as a feature in the interior. A comfortable kingsize bed with a good quality mosquito net is on a mezzanine floor which was essential.

With spacious grounds containing a large outdoor pool flanked by fruiting potted lemon trees we often found ourselves outside enjoying the sun and the view.

It is a short climb from Casafoso to the town which is very small and quiet with a good restaurant on every corner. It only took a few days to explore.
Local attractions Dante and Terrace restaurants, for service, scenery and good food at a reasonable price. Wine tasting in a local cantina served in the cellar passages of the town walls. Trips by car: If you’re planning to explore Tuscany by car we would recommend a more powerful vehicle as most country roads are steep, winding and narrow. Our compact hire car struggled carrying us and our luggage or shopping and had a low wheel base. As a destination San Gimignano was an amazing site and enough to keep you occupied. There are many great restaurants in San Gimignano, our favourite was Ristorante La Mangatoia. Be sure to try a glass of the famous white wine, Vernaccia di San Gimignano with the antipasti platter. We enjoyed exploring the walled medieval town at dawn and dusk more than during the heat of the day especially as the beautiful streets aren’t as crowded by day-trippers. For its beautiful architecture a day trip to Siena is essential. We’d recommend waking early to explore the city as it very quickly becomes crowded and hot.

we really enjoyed it. very welcoming hosts. pool facilities were excellent. accommodation is a bit small with regard to kitchen workspace, etc but all the necessary facilities are there and we tended to be out sight seeing a lot of the time.
it was lovely to sit out on the terrace every morning and have our breakfast.

Local attractions We hired a car and did a fair bit of driving about. Nice meal and views from small hilltop hamlet called Volpaia only 15 minutes drive away from Casafoso. Able to get the bus ( very cheap ) from Radda to Florence ( 90 minutes ) and Siena ( 60 minutes ). Both beautiful cities. Also recommend visits to ancient towns of San Gimigiano and Monteriggioni but need a car for these.

We have just come back from spending a delightful week at Casafoso. The owners and their family were extremely welcoming and despite living next door, we did not feel that they intruded on our privacy. In fact it was beneficial that they were close at hand as they were immediately able to sort out a couple of small issues that we had.

The pool is huge, with the most wonderful vistas and was kept immaculately clean with the help of a small cleaning robot which we were asked to remove and put back at the end of each day when we had finished. This was no hardship as we found it quite fascinating to watch whilst it went about its business of cleaning the pool!

The location is excellent, just a short steep uphill walk into Radda where there was a good selection of restaurants and there is Co-op supermarket a 5 minute drive away.

The bathroom is tiny and rather outdated but this was outweighed by the overall wonderful rustic charm of the furnishings and the lovely iron bedstead with a beautiful bedspread that added to the effect. There was also an essential mosquito net above the bed.

We cooked several times there and although the facilities were a little basic, they were more than adequate for our needs. We enjoyed using the veranda area to eat outside and despite the property being close to the village, we found the location to be very peaceful.

I would thoroughly recommend a stay at Casafoso.

The cottage is in a fantastic location, a 10min walk uphill to the lovely village of Radda, it's a very peaceful and private setting, with beautiful views of the Tuscan countryside from the terrace and garden where we enjoyed our breakfasts and some lunches of delicious cheeses and antipasto purchased from the local deli, The pool is beautifully clean with great views, The bathroom & kitchen are both very basic and very small, ,
Local attractions Radda is a lovely village within walking distance with a range of cafes , restaurants and wine tastings, The village of Volpaia is very close and worth a visit, Castello de Meleto is a beautiful place for wine tasting,, The towns of Castellina & Gaiole also worth visiting, Also great for day trips to Siena and Florence,

Gerne wieder!

The accommodation is as idyllic as it looks on the photographs. A really beautiful former granary set on a very well maintained property. The highlight is the pool area - better than many a luxury hotel - with the most wonderful view over the valley, lined by lemon trees and very clean.
Unfortunately there is a very significant BUT with this holiday - the mosquitoes. With no air conditioning it was necessary to keep the windows open at night and we were savaged by the mosquitoes. We finished the week covered in bites despite burning citronella candles, plug-in deterrents and several cans of repellent. It was clearly an issue for the quests who preceded us as they left candles and repellent behind. A real shame.

Unfortunately, mosquitoes are attracted to the hot Tuscan countryside. It is advisable to come equipped with repellent especially with properties which do not have air conditioning or insect screens.

We were looking for a villa in a private, rural location with close access to bars and restaurants as we don't have a car to transport ourselves around. Casafoso and Radda were perfect for us. The villa is an old farmhouse and fairly rustic which we found charming. It had everything we could have wanted to make ourselves at home (including a barbeque which we put to good use). We loved sitting outside on the patio every day taking in the truly beautiful scenery and enjoying the peace and quiet and the pool was also wonderful. The owners were attentive and made sure we were happy while completely respected our privacy. This is the only place we've ever visited that we would plan on returning to. Beautiful.
The bathroom is very small but for two of us it was fine.
Local attractions There's a great selection of restaurants for a range of budgets. We loved La Vigne which has outdoor seating overlooking endless vineyards and excellent food - very reasonably priced with great wines. We would also recommend booking onto a tour of a local winery. We loved our guided tour around Vignavecchia, a small-medium sized winery. Jessica who is one of the wine makers gave us a really interesting tour explaining the whole process from grape to glass and educated us all about Chianti Classico followed by a tasting. We emailed ahead to book onto the tour but if you only want to do the tasting you can just show up. It's a ten minute walk from Radda and across the road from our favourite restaurant La Vigne so it's a great idea to combine the two one afternoon! We also did a hike around what's known as the Radda loop which wasn't too taxing but had great views, you can find the map in the local tourist information office. We got the bus to Florence one day, fairly stressful as the buses are very infrequent so make sure you know the timetable well before setting out.

We selected Casafoso after consulting with Dympna regarding our requirements, ie: a small villa with a pool and within easy walking distance of a local village, she found us three and we loved the details and pictures of Casafoso. We couldn’t believe that it could be as beautiful as it looked, but it was.
We were met by the owner who was very helpful and welcoming. The villa really was a Tuscany dream. The villa itself was well appointed and cosy. The views were picture book. The pool and pool area were beautifully maintained.
We often walked to the local village of Radda, where there were ample restaurants and shops. There is a local bus that can take you into Sienna which we used on occasion. We could continue with our complements but suffice is to say the villa was beautiful, the owners were warm and friendly and we had the best time ever.
