Casafoso, Radda in Chianti - Siena

1 bedroom 1 bathroom 2 guests Private Pool 4,5 - Excellent - Excellent 4,5

Made for two, Casafoso opens the door to the heart of Chianti. Lying immediately south of the hilltop town of Radda, this small cottage will give you a real taste of the wine-producing region. A short walk uphill brings you to the quiet but charming settlement, which has a good restaurant on most corners. Set into the hillside – so much so that a picturesque piece of rock protrudes into the back of the lounge – Casafoso sits to one side of the owner’s villa in neat, fenced grounds overlooking local vineyards and olive-clad fields.

The accommodation, within one two-storey space, is homely and simple. A mezzanine-level bedroom, under a traditional beamed ceiling, maximizes the space available. A small terrace immediately outside is ideal for gently shaded meals. The owners make occasional use of the substantial private swimming pool and surrounding patio but it is largely yours. When you get tired of pretending to be a local in the nearby villages, Siena and San Gimignano are within easy reach, with Florence a little further.

Our Thoughts
Access to Chianti off the beaten track, potted lemon trees by the large pool, the sun, the welcome – these are just some of the reasons why we think this villa is so memorable. We like the feeling of space afforded by the arrangement of the bedroom on a mezzanine level. But most of all this is a great base for mixing up laid-back local life and Sienese sophistication.

Notes
One bedroom. One bathroom. There is no heating in the villa apart from the open fire.
The village hosts a lively festival during the last weekend in August – avoid it or join in the fun. Despite the villa’s proximity to the owner’s home, guests have said they did not feel intruded upon.

Pool
Large and surrounded by a stone-flagged, furnished terrace, the pool is a short walk from the cottage, across the owners’ well-kept garden. The water is accessed via ladder steps at the shallow end. The pool is 14x7 metres and 0.9-1.6metres deep. It's open from mid-May to mid-September, weather permitting.

We had a great stay at Casafoso. We know the area well and it's location is hard to beat if you want to explore the Siena, Florence area. The villa is a good size and the bedroom is great. The shower, as noted by other reviewers, is not a pleasant experience and the bathroom especially does need a facelift. However, the pool is amazing with an incredible view and being able to walk to Radda is fantastic (although it is a VERY strenuous 8 minutes :-) ) The owners are lovely and always on hand if you need anything.
Local attractions There are plenty of restaurants in Radda and they are all good. Also, nearby Castellina and Greve shouldn't be missed.
