Pian dei Teri, Arezzo

2 bedrooms 2 bathrooms 4 people Private Pool 5 - Superb - Superb 5

With an idyllic setting surrounded by vineyards and olive groves, Pian dei Teri is perfect for nature lovers. This pair of characterful stone-built, split-level villas create the perfect space for two couples or a family with older children. Sleeping four, in two double bedrooms, the traditional Tuscan-style interiors with warm terracotta walls and dark beams are rustic, warm and inviting.

Outside there are communal areas for dining under the Tuscan stars as well as a spacious covered loggia with a stone-built barbecue, table and bench set midway between the villas. Everyone will love the well-proportioned length of private pool, well-placed in a secluded setting backed by shrubs and trees. But the bucolic views are the real star of the show here, looking across the valley to the mountains. Imagine daily relaxing walks or al fresco feasts among the delightfully mature grounds abundant with fountains, fruit trees, flowers and a water-lily-topped pond. With such natural beauty on your doorstep there might not seem much incentive to leave the villa but don’t forget to pop out and pick up some fresh pasta and other local goodies from the grocery store at nearby Castelnuovo dei Sabbioni.

Our Thoughts
The antique-style wood burning stove in the kitchen offers warmth on those cooler nights or guests can use it to create a hearty, slow-cooked Tuscan dish safe in the knowledge there’s also a modern stove right next to it. But it’s the outside that makes this villa a favourite with guests due to grounds that excel – with special places in which to soak up the sun or steal a little shade.

Notes
Two bedrooms. Two bathrooms. The owners use the ground floor only for storage. A pretty but delicate wooden bridge leads across the pond, so care is needed if younger children stay. The garden is fenced.

Pool
Set slightly below and away from the villa, the pool has internal steps leading into the water at one end, a pretty pergola with a table and chairs at the other. Framed by a terracotta terrace furnished with sun loungers and parasols, this area gives way to a generous expanse of well-tended lawn. Pool size: 5m x10m, 1.5m deep. Open May through September, weather permitting.

This is a very special, unique place. We are a couple in our early thirties, went for a week during our honeymoon, and it was a delight. The highlight was the food! Marco and Rosa cooked the most amazing, enormous meals. We had one on our first night, and requested two more evenings because the food was so good! They are also really lovely and generous - perfect hosts. Worth mentioning though that the property is very private - so don't worry about them being next door.

Two things worth mentioning though - they do have an Alsatian - which is safely locked up down at their property, but if you do have a big fear/dislike of dogs, then it's worth knowing! And also, the drive up there is crazy!! 2km of terrible road - we got up in our little hired Fiat, but do not try getting there in a sports car - four by four would be preferable! The first time is quite a shock, but by the third or fourth time, it actually becomes quite fun - like rally driving!!

The property is beautiful - an idyllic setting, stunning views (don't be alarmed by the power station you can see as you drive towards it - you can't see if from the property!), the buildings are simple but beautiful, the gardens are gorgeous, there's a bbq, hammocks, and of course the pool - we went late September and it was COLD! 16 degrees - but we had a few breathtaking dips! And in the summer I'm sure it'd be lovely and refreshing!

Overall, a magical, special place (not ideal for kids) - but for a romantic holiday for two, or a fun holiday with mates, this is a place you'll never forget.
Local attractions A MUST DO - a highlight of our honeymoon - the cooking course with Simone at Ristorante Malborghetto, in Lecche in Chianti, near Gaiole in Chianti - expensive, but worth every penny - fascinating and fun and the best meal we had on honeymoon!
