Spa & hot springs in Tuscany

  • Spas & Hot Springs

Tuscany is the ideal place to travel (and often decide to stay) for those  who love to indulge in hot and therapeutic waters. It’s volcanic territory has several spas where you can stay for a day treatment or for several days holiday. .Montecatini and Chianciano are probably the most famous and celebrated ones thanks to the host of celebrities that used to visit them during the sixties. No wonder Federico Fellini chose to shoot his masterpiece “8 e mezzo” in Chianciano Terme.

Hot water springs from under the ground but its benefits and chemical composition are very different from one area to another. Spas in the north of Tuscany area, as well as in Montecatini and Chianciano, are recommended for their depurative and curative properties for liver, stomach and kidneys. Hot springs in the Sienese area, such as Rapolano Terme, San Casciano Bagni, Bagni San Filippo and Bagni di Petriolo, are rich in sulphur and calcium carbonate are indicated for respiratory disease and joint pains.

The Etruscan and Roman people already knew about and were keen in indulging in hot springs. The Etruscans had built a temple dedicated to the god of Good Health, close to the Silene springs where the newer quarter of Chianciano stands today. News of the curative power of this water became well known during Roman times, as Horace visited this area in the south of Siena on the advice of his physician during the 1st century BC. Luxurious Roman villas were built in the area near the thermal baths and wealthy Romans had it as an honor point to spend a day at the spa at least once a week. Ruins of the ancient ones are often visible still nowadays next to the modern spas.

It’s still possible nowadays to relax open air in hot water, free of charge, 24 hours a day. Here are three tips if you want to behave like an ancient Etruscan!

There are many spas in Tuscany, north to south. For further information about type of water and treatments available, please visit this website and find a link to each of them.

  • Saturnia

Legend has it that an angry Saturn hurled a lightning bolt into the ground causing the warm sulphurous waters to flow from the crater of a now extinct volcano! The waters cascade down from a waterfall into various tiered pools where you can swim in the warm therapeutic water. Scoop the mineral filled mud from the bottom of the pool and smear it all over your body, leave for a few minutes before rinsing it off under the water for baby soft skin.

Directions: - From Saturnia drive out of town. At the main road turn right. The big spa will be on your left. Just past the entrance to the spa on your left you will see a hot river running through a field. Continue down the main road until it makes a sharp turn to the left. The hot springs waterfall is located on your right at this corner. Take the dirt road in and then turn right into a large parking area.

The thermal waterfall and pools are free of charge but it does get busy in the peak summer months. In addition there are also pools and spa treatments available in the nearby spa.

  • Bagni San Filippo

Bagni San Filippo is located in the south of the district of Siena, not far from Monte Amiata, 1.738 meters over sea level. It is a small hot spring and it’s well known for the presence of calcium deposits, which form white concretions of calcium carbonate as well as waterfalls. There’s a warm pool and a spa open from May to October but the most beautiful part is the so-called Balena Bianca (White Whale) concretion along the stream Fosso Bianco that goes down through the woods from Bagni San Filippo village.
To reach it from Siena, take the SR 2 direction south and turn right on SP 61 direction Abbadia San Salvatore – Bagni San Filippo – Monte Amiata. Once you enter the small village of Bagni san Filippo, turn right towards Fosso Bianco.

  • Terme di Petriolo

Both Roman Marcus Tullius Cicero and Martial mentioned Petriolo thermal springs several times in their works and it’s still possible to see Roman ruins of the ancient spa next to the natural bath tubs. Immersed in the countryside between Siena and Grosseto, the hot springs flow at 43°C and are located right along river Farma, where you can bath to refresh.
Petriolo water is rich in sulphur, relieving joint pains. Spa are within easy reach either you are staying nearby Grosseto or Siena.

To get there take the SS 223 motorway between the two Tuscan towns and exit at Iesa – Montepescini – Terme di Petriolo. Drive about 3km and you will be surrounded by a piercing smell of rotten eggs: there you are!
