Solaria di Santa Maddalena 14 is a large villa set in an elevated position, surrounded by its own mature gardens with spectacular views over the surrounding olive groves, vineyards and rolling hillsides. Built from traditional hand carved Tuscan stone, this spacious villa is perfect for large groups or families wishing to holiday together.
The pool is located in the grounds behind the house and is surrounded by mature hedging for privacy. There is a selection of tables, chairs, sun loungers and umbrellas poolside, also at one end is a covered gazebo providing welcome shade during the heat of the day. Access to the pool is via internal steps located at one corner of the shallow end.
Outside the well maintained gardens planted with Mediterranean trees, and shrubs wrap around the house, there is a large brick built barbecue with paved area, which is perfect for the outdoor chef. The local village of Vagliagli is only 1.5km away where there is a grocer, but for more choice the town of Castellina in Chianti 15km away has a wide range of bakers, groceries, supermarkets, banks and restaurants.
A short flight of steps leads up to the entrance door, inside is a small lobby area with stairs leading to the first floor and also to the lower ground floor. To the left is the kitchen, and directly in front is the large L shaped lounge/dining room.
This bright airy room has large windows on three sides, allowing light to flood in, there are also two sets of double doors which open on to the covered balcony. The room is comfortably furnished with sofas and TV in one half and there is a large dining table and chairs for fourteen people in the other half.
The covered balcony also has table and chairs for outside dining. There is also a small flight of stairs leading up to the first floor.
The attractive wooden fitted kitchen has an oven, built in gas hobs, dishwasher and free standing fridge freezer. There is also a door with steps leading out into the garden.
The lower ground floor has a small utility area with washing machine, iron and ironing board. Two of the bedrooms are located on this level, the first has an antique style wooden bed with matching painted chest of drawers and a wardrobe.
The second larger bedroom has a double bed, wardrobe with matching side tables and a sofa. There are two bathrooms with showers, but neither are ensuite. These rooms would be ideal for part of a group who would like to have their own space, yet still be a part of the main party.
The first floor which can be accessed via either the main entrance hall or from the lounge has a further four bedrooms and three bathrooms, all of the rooms open off of a long hallway which also has a row of fitted cupboards for storage along one wall. Starting with the rooms overlooking the garden side of the house, on the left is a very nice twin room with fitted wardrobes, wooden beds and matching furniture, this room has a large window with views over the garden and pool.
Next door is a modern bathroom with shower which is shared with the double bedroom opposite. This room has a double bed, large wooden wardrobe, chest of drawers and comfy armchair. The large window has views over the gardens, pool area and the Tuscan countryside.
Adjacent is another bright airy room with double bed, large wooden wardrobe, with matching furniture and a comfy armchair. Instead of a window, this room has double part glazed doors which open to a ‘Juliet’ style balcony, with views to the side of the house over the surrounding landscape. The second bathroom separates this room from the final bedroom on this floor, this is a striking room with full size bath and hand held shower.
The fourth bedroom is again well furnished with double bed, wardrobe matching furniture and armchair, and also has a ‘Juliet’ balcony with views. Next door is the final of the three bathrooms on this floor and this has a shower with curtain, basin and WC.
A flight of stairs from the lounge, leads up to the top floor. This again would be ideal for a family group wanting to have their own space, whilst still being a part of the main party. This self contained floor has a lounge area with three sofas arranged around the room, one of which is a double sofa bed.
There is a small table with four chairs and double doors leading out onto a terrace, which has spectacular views over the surrounding olive groves and vineyards. Doors open from the lounge to a bedroom with double bed, wooden wardrobe with matching furniture and a large window lets light flood into the room. Also accessed via the lounge is a modern bathroom with shower, basin and WC.
A large villa, with lovely gardens and its own private pool; with stunning views over the surrounding countryside.
With seven bedrooms and six bathrooms there is plenty of space for large groups wishing to holiday together.
Ideally located with the local town of Vagliagli only 1.5km away.

Located in a paved area, surrounded by mature hedging to the rear of the house is the swimming pool. Rectangular in shape the pool measures 5.40 metres by 14.80 metres.
The pool is accessed via a set of internal steps at one corner of shallow end. The depth of the pool is 1 metre increasing to 2.20 metres at the deepest point. The pool is open from end April to end September. Pool towels are provided at an extra cost per week.
Nearest town
The local village of Vagliagli is only 1.5km away where there is a grocer, but for more choice the town of Castellina in Chianti 15km away has a wide range of bakers, groceries, supermarkets, banks and restaurants.

An excellent location, with stunning views and setting. Despite Having a full complement of 14 guests ranging from 4 to 79 years of age, we never felt cramped and there was always plenty of personal space within the villa and places to visit and walks within a short distance of the villa.
These are constructive critisisms rather than dislikes, and they are minor
1) The steps in the pool could have been more easily highlighted as a few guests found them hard to identify when leaving the pool
2) Stereo needs iPod/MP3 attachement - with current airline luggage limitations not many people will know to bring lots of CDs to listen to
3) We only found out at the last minute that we were arriving on a bank holiday ... finding provisions was a little traumatic and highlighting this and where to go a head of our arrival would have been great
4) Ensuring that there were a few washing tablets etc would have helped too - I'm sure that most people when they attend leave some of these behind... where do they go
5) We didn't find any brochure of local activities and recommendations at the villa. I know there is the To-Tuscany guide but you can't then print it off when you know were you are... A guest book would have been good too to see recommendations.
6) Directions to the villa - ghastly.
Siena, of course. But parking! ... A recommendation: Park at the station and get the 10 escalators up the city gates - Easy.
Visit the restaurant in the village - easy to walk to, excellent reasonably priced food (Michellin recommended), full of locals, 14 at a time was not a problem and then walk home in the dark following the fireflies... magical

What were the highlights of your holiday? My 65th Birthday Celebration Dinner in the nearby Dievole Vineyard and resort complex. A sumptuous 5 Course banquet with a wine per course ( including Novecento Chianti Classico, Riserva and Broccato) expertly served by knowlegeable
staff.;Speak if you can to their Direttore Fabio Pala; Complete with special birthday cake and friends and family all around and all for less than 65 euroes per head!!

We all tended to hire the cheapest low cc rental cars, some felt they should have upgraded a little to take account of some of the roads and terrain especially having 2 or more people in car plus luggage. I have earlier mentioned that the directions to Villa were a little confusing. Lucca was disappointing

I like To Tuscany, partly because it has a tremendous range of villas, and partly because (unlike many companies) it has an excellent website that provides what you really want when choosing a villa.

Our accommodation, which cost less than £800 for the week, is in a converted stone farmhouse next to a 12th Century Franciscan chapel. There is a pergola shaded by vines round the back here we quickly settle into a rhythm of eating long pasta suppers while the shadows lengthen.
