Terrazza Alta is a large villa at the top of the hamlet Borgo Gaiole. It is reached by several flights of terracotta steps through the pretty hamlet. The entrance to this pretty and homely villa is from a small, well maintained courtyard.
Inside is a bright open plan room, with lounge and kitchen/diner. Immediately on entering is the comfortable lounge which has three armchairs and a double sofa. There is a stereo with a collection of CDs available. In one corner is a TV. The floor is tiled with polished terracotta, while the ceiling is typical Tuscan with wooden beams and terracotta tiles.
Passing under a terracotta arch there is the dining table which seats six people. Next to this is a large, well equipped sideboard. To the back of this part of the room is a fitted kitchen with an oven, electric hobs, dishwasher and a fridge with separate freezer. In the living area it's possible to hear a slight hum from the town activities.
Off the lounge is a small hall from where there is access to the first of the three double bedrooms. This room is furnished in pale colours. It has a double wardrobe. The window is a high oval shaped window. A bathroom with shower is also accessed from the hall. There is also a door which leads out to a private courtyard.
To the back of the kitchen is a small room with an irregular shape. It's furnished with sturdy iron bunkbeds. There is a chest of drawers and wardrobe in the room. The large window looks out to the main courtyard. It's an ideal room for children, not recommended for adults.
Off the kitchen is access to a small hall. Directly off this is a bathroom with tub with shower fixture. And there is access to the internal courtyard. The hall continues on passing iron stairs with marble steps, to the second double bedroom, which is an irregular triangular shape. The room is tastefully done in red colours with a pale coloured wardrobe and chest of drawers. In one corner is an armchair.
The stairs are protected both at the bottom and top by little gates. They are quite narrow and steep. Upstairs is the main suite. It has a small lounge furnished with two armchairs and a writing desk. This leads out to a balcony with table and chairs. It has a fantastic view over the roof tops, onto Gaiole and then across the Chianti hills.
To the other side of the stairs is a small hall which has a door leading out of the villa to the communal areas of this pretty Tuscan hamlet. Also off the hall is a bathroom with shower, and a large double bedroom. There is a double wardrobe and a large chest of drawers. Two windows provide the room with plenty of light.
On the lower floor of Terrazza Alta there is the small internal courtyard. One side is open to a hamlet path. This is accessed by an iron gate. Crossing the path and passing through another iron gate there is access to the villa garden. This is on two levels. It is perfectly maintained with lovely lawns and pretty plants. Going up to the upper level there is a table with 6 chairs, shaded by a lovely pergola. All around the garden there are other apartments.
There are three covered parking places allocated to Terrazza Alta.
The double beds cannot be made into twins.
Throughout the villa are heating/cooling units. These can only be turned on when the local law allows it, which depends on the weather. Should you require them please check with the hamlet manager if they are on. The cost of their use is charged extra.

Location: Borgo Gaiole

Borgo Gaiole is a large hamlet with 40 villas, well laid out, over looking the Chianti town of Gaiole. It's a short walk into the pretty town centre where there several typical cafés.
The property is built on sloped land with a covered car park at the lower level. From here there are steps or a lift to the central courtyard, these continue up to the pool area. The pool area has full sun and is a pretty spot to enjoy the views of the surrounding Chianti over the roof tops of Gaiole.
This new hamlet has been built in true Tuscan style with plenty of terracotta and stone. The communal paths and courtyards are dotted with flower pots and constantly maintained by the caretaker.

Pool Info

The large pool is of an irregular shape, similar to a half moon. It's surrounded by a lovely deck dotted with several sun-beds and three large umbrellas providing shade. In the centre of the pool are two large columns supporting a balcony.
The area is surrounded by various villas, which look onto the pool. From the pool there are pretty views over the roof tops onto Gaiole and the Chianti hills beyond the town. There is a small gym with showers available for guests and residents to use.
The pool is 27x9 metres and 1.3 metres deep. It is open from Easter to October depending on the weather conditions.

Pros We really enjoyed our stay in Terrazza Alta. The location on the hill over Gaiole is very quiet and offers a nice view of the valley. The rooms in the apartment are spacious and old-style equipped, which only adds to the real toscana atmosphere. Garden is very neat, with the possibility to eat in the shadow of the summer house's hedge. All the members of our group, our baby included, liked the whole Borgo Gaiole complex very much. It was just the ideal starting point for our Chianti region trips.
Cons As mentioned in the previous comments, the upper bedroom doesn't have door, which is quite unusual except you're a caveman :) On the other hand, the first floor offers a lot of space to relax, the balcony with the growing bay leaf in the pots being the top! Plus it took us some time to find the italian electric travel adapters in the house, we finally found two, one on the kitchen desk and another attached to the iron, so keep on searching :)
Local attractions We discovered little by little, that the region has numerous castles. Castello di Brolio as a must see. But absolute top was the small village Vertine just over the Borgo Gaiole, we enjoyed a very nice lunch there.

Pros Spacious, well equipped, great view from upper floor terasse, apartment in good state, staff was quick and helpful
Cons no green around just some potted plants, area around pool much too small, the staircase to the upper floor is extremely narrow, bedroom in upper floor has no door, you can hear your neighbors as if they lived in the same appartment

Pros Convenience of the town's small and good businesses. Also area was central to many of our destinations
Cons Needs new frying pans and sharper knives.
Local attractions Castles, towns and wineries within walking or easy driving distances. Gaiole merchants friendly and helpful when stuck on language. A perfect little town that had all we required to make our stay memorable. And good exercise walking up and down the hill. Farmers market on Saturdays was a bonus

Pros The condominuim was very clean and well looked after, completely safe for the children and yet adult enough to not feel like a holiday village. Close enough to walk into the town
Local attractions Restaurants all serve good quality food. There is a fantastic selection of price ranges and quality available to suit all pockets. Travel to local towns and villages expands the offering further. Wine tasting available in town and in the local hills

Pros Terrazza Alta is in a great location, it's really well equipped and is a superbly finished apartment. The views from the top balcony were stunning.
Cons It was unfortunate that the garden was separate from the apartment and that a common pathway separated the two it lacks a little privacy because of this.
Local attractions Enjoyed the wine at la Cantinetta del Chianti in Gaiole. the owner was really helpful and pleasant. Beautiful little deli at the top of the town opposite the supermarket with beautifully home cooked speciality dishes every day.

Pros The amount of space was fantastic. The kitchen was well stocked. Everything was very clean. Pool towels were provided (I was told they were not). Location to Gaiole restaurants and shops was excellent and position for exploring Chianti and Tuscany perfect.
Cons The scorpion in one shower on the first morning! The pool is not heated and was chilly, but would be fine later in the season. It was a minor challenge getting our rental in in/out of the garage. Slight musty smell throughout.
Local attractions Castellina was our favorite Chianti village. We preferred San gimigiano to Siena. Best gelato was found in Siena.

Pros We loved the apartment and the whole complex. It was well designed and built with tradition and comfort in mind. Fantastic views and amenities.
Cons If we have to find anything to not like about the place (difficult!) ...there was an electrical hum at night next to our bed and the mattress was harder than we were used to! ... all easily tolerable. An electric kettle would have been appreciated too!
Local attractions We loved the ancient hamlet of Vertine nearby, which had I think inspired the architect of Borgo Gaiole. The young adults enjoyed the Whisky a GoGo, in the main village!
