Borratella is a luxury Tuscan villa located in the heart of the Chianti a short distance from Brolio castle and Gaiole in Chianti. The villa is located on a wine estate so surrounded by its vineyards and the rolling Chianti hills covered with forests beyond.
The pool is located down some large stone steps from a loggia. It's in a fantastic position and well maintained with a lovely lawn and garden around it. It looks out to the vineyards and pretty views.
The villa is entered into a small hall. Like the rest of the villa, it has a tradition Tuscan villa ceiling of terracotta tiles and wooden beams. It's furnished with several antique pieces. Off this is a bathroom with a Victorian bath with handheld shower fitting, there is also a separate shower.
Off the room and down a couple of steps is the large kitchen which has a pretty floor of terracotta and wood. Along two walls is the kitchen unit, which has gas hobs, an oven and dishwasher, the large double fridge/freezer is in a small pantry off the kitchen. A tradition wood burning stove is to one side, this cannot be used. In the centre of the room is a long wooden table which can seat 10 people. Off the pantry is a laundry and a w.c.
Passing under a wooden arch is a lounge, furnished with a triple and double sofa plus an armchair. These are huddled around a large, original Tuscan fireplace which can be used on the colder days in Winter.
Between the kitchen and pantry there is a door out to the large, covered loggia which is furnished with a huge long table with benches and lights above it. To one side is a large fireplace to barbeque, next to this is a stone sink. This is a fantastic place for dining. Over the low stone wall around the loggia there are views of the pool, garden, vineyards and olive groves.
On the ground floor there is a bedroom which is in a small detached annex. The room can be accessed by some external stairs which lead onto a small internal balcony or from a door from the garden. Inside there is a little hall of which is a bathroom with shower, and a pretty double bedroom furnished with a TV, a wardrobe, a chest of drawers and a writing desk.
From the entrance hall there are stairs to the first floor, where there is a landing. Off this to the left is a huge suite done in white and turquoise. It has a lovely wooden floor and furnished with a triple wardrobe, a couple of armchairs, TV, chest of drawers and a large double bed. Off the back of the room is a spacious bathroom with large shower.
To the right of the landing is a second lounge which has a tv. It has a lovely travertine floor and is furnished with a triple and double sofa and two armchairs. From this room there is access to a small loggia.
Off the lounge is a twin bedroom done in white and green. There is a small TV and wardrobe. In the room is a decorative fireplace. En-suite is a big bathroom with large shower.
From the landing and up some wooden stairs there is the tower floor. Immediately at the top of the stairs there are several armchairs and immediately in front is a glass enclosed bathroom with shower. From this little room there is a bedroom with a king-size double bed. The room has a couple of armchairs around a coffee table and a wardrobe. Like the other bedrooms it also has a TV.
The double bedrooms cannot be made into twins and the twin cannot be made into a double.
Borratella is a luxury property, maintained to an excellent standard. The caretaker lives on the estate, a short distance away from the villa. He can be easily contacted for any queries.

Pool Info

The pool is located to one side of the villa. It is accessed from the main loggia and down some wonderful, large stone steps. It is nestled in a pretty, perfectly manicured lawn dotted with trees and surrounded by a paved deck which has several sun beds.
Excellent views of the surrounding Chianti hills covered in a dense forest can be enjoyed while relaxing by the pool side or in the cool water. Immediately around the villa there are the property's vineyards which can also be seen from the pool area. To one side of the pool there are roman steps to enter the crystal water.
The pool is 15x8 metres and 1.6 to 2 metres deep. It's open from April to October, weather permitting.

Pros Borratella is everything we thought a villa in Tuscany would be. A roomy, charming stone house, comfortably furnished and situated in the middle of a vineyard. Also, it was a big plus that the bathrooms have been updated with modern fixtures. The shower in the bathroom we used was amazing! The caretaker, Muhammud, speaks limited English but was helpful and eager to do anything he could to make our stay enjoyable.
Cons Can't think of a thing we didn't like.
Local attractions The town of Radda, about 15 minutes away, was a favorite with spectacular views and good restaurants. Also, we enjoyed the nearby Castle in Brolio and one of our favorite meals was there at the Osteria del Castello. The eggplant stuffed tortellini in buffalo mozzarella cream sauce was outstanding! The whole area is picturesque and beautiful!

Pros Borratella was over and above what we expected. Absolutely everything was in pristine condition, or brand new, which made us feel immediately comfortable. We really liked how the house had been finished off to such a high spec - the attention to detail communicated how much the owner really loves the place. The outdoor areas including the pool and view were the biggest plus for us - the scent of lavender wafting through the air added to the idyllic setting. Collecting fresh figs for our breakfast fruit salad was a treat.

As four of the seven people in our group were struck down with unexpected injuries and illness plus a newborn baby, we were not able to tour around as much as we had expected - this was no hardship! Relaxing at Borratella more than compensated for what we lacked in mobility.

Another huge plus was Muhammed, the caretaker who lives down the road. He was lovely and provided immediate assistance for broken light bulbs, a malfunctioning toilet, missing pool cushions - and he even fixed a screw in one if the injured's wheelchair (house is not wheelchair accessible). Although his English is limited, he was so service minded and had a lovely demeanour that charmed all of us.
Cons The house would benefit from a Borratella information book including information about appliances, wifi, and perhaps more importantly, a background about the house, its history, the vineyard and the extensive renovations that have just been competed. Also, we could not get the wifi in the guest cottage, which was curious as they have ensured excellent wifi throughout the house and even down to the pool.

Pros The grounds were absolutely beautiful and the villa easily accommodated 8 adults with comfort. There were plenty of areas to sit and enjoy through out the day. The starter packs were also appreciated as we were able to make an easy pasta meal along with the help of the local farmer and his goods being sold at Gaiole.
Cons I was disappointed that the kitchen was not fully operational and did not have a cappuccino/espresso machine. The stove was not large enough when cooking indoors for a party of 8; however, using the outdoor cooking area did help when grilling.
Local attractions We loved going into Gaiole to the butcher and market for fresh ingredients for our evening meal. The local butcher was kind enough to share his own personal curing room where he stores his prosciutto. Visiting Brolio Castle was also a highlight with breathtaking views and exquisite wines.

Pros 14th Century farmhouse updated to a very high standard. Beautiful setting in Chianti countryside. Difficult to leave every day to visit sites in Tuscany, and one week not nearly enough time!
Cons The separate apartment was of a slightly lesser quality that the stunning rest of house.
