Capanna leopoldina is an independent cottage on two floors, located in a sloped garden at the top of the hamlet Rocca di Castellina. From the villa there are fantastic views of the Chianti and of Castellina in Chianti which lies across vineyards and olive groves slightly further up the hill.
Outside the villa is a huge stone paved terrace with incredible views of the olive groves and vineyards bordered by forests that surround this wonderful Tuscan villa. From here the views continue down the valley towards Monteriggioni and then on beyond up the hills that surround Casole val d'Elsa and Colle val d'Elsa. The terrace is furnished with a table and chairs to dine al fresco and to one side is stone built barbeque.
Inside the villa is spacious and bright, it is done in typical Tuscan style with a terracotta floor and the ceiling of terracotta tiles and wooden beams. Entering from the terrace there is a large fully equipped kitchen which includes gas hobs, an oven, dishwasher and a large fridge with separate freezer section. In the centre of the kitchen is a large marble topped island providing plenty of work space.
Passing under an arch there is the dining room. This room is furnished with a tradition Tuscan wooden table with benches on either side. It seats comfortably 10 people. From this room a large glass door provides access to the stone paved terrace outside.
A second terracotta arch leads into the comfortable lounge. This is a large, spacious room which has an angle sofa at the far end and a double sofa to the other side of the room. Between these two sofas there is a glass door out to the terrace. Next to the angle sofa is a terracotta fireplace, ideal for the cooler nights in Autumn or Spring. Off the lounge is a short corridor which leads to a light blue bathroom which has a shower.
Stairs from the lounge go up to the first floor. Where there are four bedrooms, each with an en-suite bathroom. The first of the bedrooms is at the end of a short corridor. This is the smallest of the rooms and is furnished in a lovely pastel colour. The double bed can be converted into a twin if requested when booking. The large window is in a typical Tuscan style with terracotta tiles. In the room is a wardrobe and a double sofa. En-suite is a bathroom with shower.
Next to this bedroom is a double bedroom that cannot be converted into a twin. The room is done in a pretty orange colour. It has a comfortable double sofa to one side and a double door, wooden wardrobe to the other side. The windows look to the back of the property, and the forests that surround it. En-suite is a bathroom with shower.
At the top of the stairs there is a large suite. It is a lovely room furnished in a soft green colour with double doors to a gravel terrace at the top of the villa garden. To one side of the terrace is a table with chairs which look out towards Castellina in Chianti and the views of the Tuscan hills. Inside the spacious room is a wardrobe, writing desk with chair and a double sofa. The en-suite bathroom has a shower. This room cannot be made into a twin.
The final bedroom is to the right of the stairs. This is also a suite. On entering there is a small sitting area furnished with a double sofa and a writing desk with chair. A terracotta arch leads to the sleeping area where there is a double, iron bed and a wooden wardrobe. The two large windows look out towards Castellina and the excellent views of the rolling Chianti hills. The en-suite bathroom has a shower and a tub.
Should twin rooms be required please request this when booking.
The owners live on the farm a short distance from the villa. There is a reception area at the farm for local information and assistance. There is also an Internet connection at the reception.
The swimming pool is 150 meters from Capanna Leopoldina

Location: Rocca di Castellina

Rocca di Castellina is a working wine and olive oil estate just under 1km from Castellina in Chianti. On the property there are three villas rented plus the owner's residence, and the farm buildings. The entire farm is surrounded by vineyards and olive grove, and has marvelous views down the valley and onto the rolling Tuscan hills beyond.
The pool is above the main building of the property. It's located about halfway between them and the independent cottage. It's a lovely large pool with fantastic views through the olive groves and down the valley onto the hills beyond.
The agriturism farm is family run and produces wine and olive oil. There is a small reception to welcome guests and with an Internet connection. It is well positioned to walk to Castellina in Chianti or to a nearby pizzeria, however in the evenings a torch is required to return to Rocca di Castellina.

Pool Info

The pool is located on a slope, about half way between the main agriturism buildings and the Capanna Leopoldina. It is a lovely area, protected by olive groves. To one side is a typical Tuscan forest while the other side looks through the olive trees down the valley towards Colle Val d'Elsa and Monteriggioni, and the rolling hills beyond.
The area is paved with local stone and terracotta, and furnished with plenty of sun beds and umbrellas, making it a wonderful place to relax and enjoy Tuscany.

Pros Large private terrace, great views and fantastic barbeque. Good sized bedrooms were ideal for a group of four couples. Proximity to Castellina in Chianti was useful; evening meals out meant no-one needed to drive.
Cons A few sun loungers by the villa would have been nice, as the pool is a short walk away.
Local attractions The pizzeria at the top of the drive (Fondaccio dai Dottori) was great, especially by providing us with pizzas on our first night after a 11pm arrival at the villa. The gelateria in Castellina was incredible. We also enjoyed a really good meal in Taverna Squarcialupi.

Pros Well appointed spacious villa inside and outside, great scenery, excellent wine tour, tasting and food. The villa is also ideally located within the Chianti region and within 1 hour's drive of both Florence and Siena
Local attractions We had excellent meals at Il Fondaccio dai Dottori, Pizzeria Tre Porte and Antica Trattoria la Torre. There is well provisioned supermarket in the village and good bakeries for morning bread

Pros We enjoyed the outstanding views from the terrace, particularly the autumnal colour from the surrounding vineyards. The family Viti made us very welcome and Martina was very helpful and spoke good English. One evening her mother kindly baked us a cake which was delicious. A well equiped kitchen, easily able to cook for the 6 of us each evening. The Viti-domaine wine tasting with Martina at the end of our stay was excellent. Bedrooms were comfortable, all ensuite. It was nice to be out of the town whilst remaining within walking distance. There was a wired ethernet connection which was useful -- wifi was available from the terrace outside the house. Some tourist brochures and books are available in the house. A good base for sites around Siena and Florence. We visited Siena, San Gimignano, Monteriggioni, Volpaia (a nice walk from S. Maria Novella), Radda, Castellina, Montefioralle (another good walk through vineyards from here). We would be very happy to return. We asked for the gas heating to be set up which was metered so we could monitor usage -- in reality it was probably warm enough that we didn't need it.
Cons Being picky, at that time of year with evenings closing in we found the downstairs a little dark -- nothing some uplighters wouldn't fix. The electric coffee machine didn't seem to work but stove top espresso makers were available which made much nicer coffee anyway!
Local attractions Some tourist attractions mentioned above. In addition, centre of Castellina was pleasant and easy to walk around. We ate at La pizzeria Il Fondaccio in the centre of town -- a genuine pizza oven is visible from the restaurant. Antica Delizia was a real treat.

Pros We loved the location, the luxury of the accommodation, the wonderful hosts who couldn't do enough for us ... simply EVERYTHING!! Breakfast on the terrace absorbing the view, lying in the sun beside the pool (sadly, a little too cool for swimming, but no matter), wine tasting with Martina & Giuliana, and the beautiful limoncello cake & vin santo brought to us by them both. On a more prosaic note, great to have a washing machine!
Cons There was nothing we didn't like. Even having to sit out on the terrace to get the wifi was a great experience - though the stunning views did take one's mind off the emails!
Local attractions Taking pizzas home from the pizza restaurant at the top of the road was a good experience, then eating at La Sotto Volte (sp?) and the Osteria Le Galle in the piazza above the main street was wonderful. But best of all was having chef Andrea from Il Fiasco prepare a fantastic meal for us on our arrival night! Oh, and the Antica Gelateria! A different icecream every day! Visiting the small towns around, such as Monteriggioni, San Gusme, the crystal shop at Colle di Val d'Elsa , a tour to San Gimignano, and of course a day in Siena.

Pros We all adored it. We loved to huge, comfortable rooms, the superbly equipped kitchen, the big terrace and the gorgeous views. We could not have been more comfortable. The family Viti are delightful, very helpful and kind. They gave us a bottle of wine, a bottle of vin santo, a large home-baked cake and a bowl of figs and were full of good advice. The pool was lovely and had plenty of loungers. The house was furnished to a very high standard. We shall almost certainly go again and recommend it to friends. It was bliss.
Cons Almost nothing. The pool is 5 mins walk from the house and the walk back is short but steep. The walk to the village is probably a bit more than 1 kilometre and steep. There is a very steep shortcut. We did not walk to the village as the weather was unseasonably hot (35c one day) but would give it a go in cooler weather. I guess it would be good for us!
Local attractions I have been going to La Torre for years and love it. They serve wonderful traditional food. It is a great restaurant The trattoria at the top of the drive on the Poggibonsi road is very convenient and within easy walking distance but the menu is huge and what we had was not memorable, However, it is great to have somewhere to eat that is close. In the surrounding area over many years of visiting restaurants I would recommend Lamole, Badia in Coltibuono, Locanda di San Donato,(San Donata in Poggio) La Piazza, le Vigne (Radda) and wonderful pizzas at the little pizza bar next to Dante's bar in Radda.

Pros Wonderful villa, very well equipped, and in a beautiful town in the Chianti region. Martine, the owner, was just wonderful. Very helpful and lovely. We did the wine tasting with her, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, would highly recommend it.
Cons WE stayed during August, at a very hot time of the year, and would have appreciated air conditioning. It was very hot, and hard to sleep at night, just with fans.
Local attractions This beautiful town is very central in the region of Chianti. We hired vespa's from Sienna, and explored all the neighbouring towns, which was amazing. We ate at two local restaraunts, and bought amazing food from the local deli, bakery etc.

Pros The view from the terrace was amazing, whether basking in the sun or watching thunderstorms over the valley. It was very spacious, perfect for two families with 4 young teenagers. The wine and olive oil selection from the Viti family were tne best we bought in Chianti. And the proximity to Castellina village was perfect, a walk to the Antica Delizia gelateria, Fattoria Dai Dottori - albeit a bracing uphill walk there, it was a downhill (st)roll home! And the Viti family are the most charming hosts. Best ever!
Cons The pool was quite a steep walk from the Capanna, but beautiful when you reached it.
Local attractions Antica Delizia gelateria (best ice cream shop in the world - you must visit each day you're here!) Fattoria Dai Dottori and Tres Portes restaurants in Castellina town, and Osteria alla Piazza a short drive away. And of course the Viti family's own wine and olive oil - come for this even if you don't stay in the Capanna!

Pros Spacious house, with great views from expansive patio. Well equipped kitchen, allowed us to host a dinner for 13 people, with friends traveling in Tuscany as well. Wonderful pool, not heated, but refreshing after hot days of sight seeing. Martina helped us check in and out, she was very pleasant and helpful.
Local attractions Had wonderful meals at Osteria alla Piazza, La Bottega in Volpaia, Tre Porte and Re Gallo. Wife and I had a great meal at Albergaccio. Our group of 13 had a nice wine tasting and lunch at Badia a Coltibouno.
