La Casanova is a stone cottage resting on a south facing hills 300 metres from central Radda in Chianti, one of Italy's most famous hilltop villages, known for its cafes, bars and restaurants. The cottage is owned by local celebrity and TV chef Luciano Porciatti who lives in the main house behind the cottage, there is a large furnished terrace with superb open views of the vineyards and olive groves or the Radda in Chianti hills. NOTE: The owners may also use the pool

Within an hour South of Florence and 40 minutes from Siena, in the key area of the Chianti wine-growing region, the stone cottage has fantastic views of rolling hills blanketed in olive groves, vineyards and woodlands. Designed for comfort and convenience, the house boasts a well-equipped kitchen, satellite television and a well-fitted bathroom, all surrounded by a pretty garden with a large patio that leads across to the swimming pool.

Pros Very nicely cared for and clean. Great views and location.
Cons Even though the website suggests the pool is shared, the photos seem to give the impression the pool is outside the villa. It's not exactly - you effectively have to go up to the owner's garden to use which I wasn't personally comfortable doing. It would be worth stating pool opening hours too. I thought about an early morning swim, but pool didn't open until 930am. Guests also need to bring pool towels - not necessarily something you'd pack.

Thank you very much for your review. We apologise for any confusion with the pool. As in the villa description 'The pool is found 30 meters from the cottage through the gate of the cottage across the drive and into the wonderfully maintained gardens of the main house.'

Pros The villa is the perfect size and location for a couple or a small party. The owners are very helpful and approachable whilst maintaining their distance in order for you to enjoy your holiday as you wish. The swimming pool is always clean and well maintained and the levels of facilities at La Casanova are excellent. Everything you could need is provided and the standard of the accommodation is very high. This is our second visit to La Casanova and we will definitely visit again - we have always been made to feel very welcome by Simonetta and Luciano and this villa never disappoints!
Cons Nothing!
Local attractions The Porciatti family run shops in the town centre are excellent and the produce they offer are delicious. The newly expanded wine and bistro are excellent and Ricciardo is very knowledgable and happy to spend time discussing and sampling all the products. We found the larger supermarket in Firenze more suitable for getting a wider range of food for self-catering purposes but with the wide range of restaurants in the local area you will never go hungry.

Pros Fantastic location, within easy walking distance of Radda and ovelooking the valley.

The accomodation was even better than the pictures, very clean, rustic and homely. The lack of airconditioning was not a problem, the shutters were very effective at keeping the inside of the house cool.
Cons Unfortunately the nearest vineyard was undergoing a replanting and so we had lots of early morning digger noise. Nothing anyone could do, we understand it's a working vineyard so no complaints.

Pros La Casanova blends old world design with modern day comforts.

Upon being welcomed by Luciano and Simonetta, we immediately felt that "their home": was "our home". We loved the amazing terrace with postcard-like views that was the perfect place to sip espresso in the morning or a glass of Chianti at sunset.

We enjoyed going to the market and being able to stay in and cook a few meals and relax.

Also, being able to "pack light" and wash clothes as necessary was a big plus.

Cons Nothing comes to mind. We loved it! Can't wait to go back.
Local attractions We enjoyed exploring the hilltop cities that were all about 1-3 hours away. Our favorite was the 2,000 year old Etruscan city of Volterra. We went twice. However, wherever the adventure of the day took us, we always enjoyed coming back home for dinner in Radda. Our favorite restaurants was La botte di Bacco with a ravioli to die for. We had great service and amazing food (very romantic). We also enjoyed La Perla del Palazzo and Pizza Pie (for a great BIG authentic pizza). Oh and don't forgot to visit the Livernano store and get some of their amazing olive oil and balsamic vinegar.

Pros The setting is beautiful; the vineyards, olive groves, Tuscan hills and sunsets are lovely. The location is very quiet and private--no other guests around; yet a very short walk to the picturesque center of Radda for restaurants, shops, and relaxing. The family that owns the villa (the Porciattis) are very pleasant, kind, and helpful without being intrusive--perfect hosts. It is easy to get to so many other beautiful and interesting places, from the teaming city of Florence to other quiet hilltop medieval hamlets.
Cons La Casanova met or exceeded all of our expectations.
Local attractions La Botte di Bacco was our favorite restaurant for a full multi-course meal; Giovannino's was great and fun for pasta or antipasto and wine; we also enjoyed Dante's and La Perla. Go to the visitors' center and get maps and directions for hikes around Radda--we especially enjoyed hiking to the little villages of Volpaia and Vertine (our favorite--hike there and have lunch in the one little café in the ancient hill-top village). We had a great winery tour, tasting, and lunch at Monterinaldi. We enjoyed visits to Florence, Siena, San Gimignano, Voltera, and Monteriggioni, among other places. Be sure to frequent the Porciatti's store in Radda for the fine meats, cheeses, and wines and the home made "specials" of the day (sauces, roasts, etc.) you can take home for dinner.

Pros Great location, good level of privacy, nicely appointed with good attention to detail. The property was clean and tidy. We didn't get to use the pool due to poor weather so cannot comment on the pool but looked good.
Cons This property is perfect for good weather, we stayed at the property during a particularly wet and cold week, such a shame :(

Pros Simonetts and her whole family were extremely friendly and helpful. The villa was exactly what we had hoped for. Close enough to town that we could walk in for a drink or coffee and far enough away that you felt like you were in the countryside.
We had some beautiful meals at local restaurants and day trips to surrounding towns. But just loved relaxing on the terrace of the villa with some local wine and food.
Cons Nothing it was perfect.
Local attractions We travelled to Castallins and had the best Gelatto. We loved San Gimigiano it had a great atmosphere and lots of interesting shops and restaurants. Our last day we went to Castello de Brolio which was an interesting historic as well as panoramic place. We also wine tasted here on the recommendation of Simonetta's son Ricardo and it was excellent.

Pros Owners respected our privacy but we knew we could speak to them at any time. View from terrace was stunning looking over the olive groves and vineyards. The proximity to the village was great, it was close enough to be convenient but far enough away to make the villa quiet (approx 5 minute walk). Everyone was very friendly and appreciated our "attempts" at Italian.
Cons Out of the control of the villa owners there were some dogs that were obviously let out mid afternoon and then had barking "matches" but it didn't disturb us.
Local attractions Osterai Alla Piazza in La Piazza for a special night, Pizza Pie for a bit of fun with a good price (pizza is as big as they describe) and La Forchette. The Porciatti deli for delicious meats, cheeses and other delightful treats. Antica Gelateria Delizia in Castellina for the best Gelato you will "ever" taste. The range of trophies on display say enough about how good it is

Pros The location was just what I had wanted. It was set among olive grove and grape vines. There was a fabulous deli/supermarket in town. The Vila was just so clean and comfortable it made you feel like you were at home.. But it was the peacefulness and absolut quietness that was so restful. And to make the experience even better the family who own the villa were the nicest people we had met in Italy. They were so welcoming and nothing was too much trouble for them.
Local attractions The Villa was within an easy drive to Florence(we went twice as there is so much to see). It was also an easy drive to San Gimonani. There is a fabulous winery called il molino di Grace. The red wine was fabulous and wished we could bring it home. We also found this wonderful little restaurant near Greve call il Casterlina. We went there twice as the pasta with truffle sauce was fabulous. The service was outstanding and it was full even though it was pouring outside.

Cons The occasional noises from local area (work being undertaken) which could disturb day but this only minimal and the thing I could think of
Local attractions Whilst we never had a bad meal in Radda our outstanding restaurant was La Botte closed followed be Al Chiasso dei Portici. In terms of local attractions Volpaia is definitely worth a visit but we thought was Siena was beautiful

Pros La Casanova was ideally situated for a short walk to all the local restaturants. It is spacious and provides all the necessities required. The hosts are very friendly and welcoming.
Cons The sitting room could do with a small arm chair otherwise guests are crambed together on the small sofa which is uncomfortable in the intense heat. The shower cubical is flimsy and doesn't suit the style of the villa, a better quality unit or a wet room would have been more appropriate.
Local attractions We visited more than once the Pizza Pie on the way to town. Food very much the same in all the restaurants. Took a bus trip to Siena which was excellent. 4 euros each way per person, but tickets in the tabacconists, which deposits you at the train station. Then a further 1.50 euro per person on the bus into Siena itself which drops you at Via Garibaldi a short walk to the centre station. You need to buy both parts of the journey together and validate the ticket once on the bus in the yellow box.

Pros The Owners were very nice and very helpful. They were there if you needed any help otherwise they let you get on with your holiday and it was very private. Radda was walking distance and had many lovley places to eat or have a drink. The Villa had everything you needed and more. You had full use of the pool (not that the weather permitted) The view was fantastic over the grape vines and olive groves. We would go back again in the future
Local attractions Radda was full of spectacular dining. You had many choices of fine dining to great cafe food. Not one meal we had in Radda was a disappointment. We explored the region by day and came back to explore the local food and wine by night. It was our first time in Tuscany and after visiting the other towns in the region we knew we had made the best choice for location. I highly recommend Radda and La Casanova
