Le Balze

Le Balze is a restored barn which has been carefully restructured into a lovely modern Tuscan villa. It is surrounded by a large pretty garden, well manicured and protected by a hedge. It has simple views of the surrounding fields, forest covered hills and the famous balze mud cliffs.
A slope with several steps leads down to the pool area. It is in full sun with several umbrellas and a gazebo for shade. The nearby hedges protect it from the refreshing breeze. The sunbeds with their comfortable cushions are perfect for relaxing.
To either side of the villa there are loggias. One is furnished with external sofas which overlook the pool area. While the loggia to the other side is near the barbeque and is furnished with a glass and iron table with chairs to dine outdoors.
Going inside there is a large lounge with a big fireplace surrounded by grey stone for the cooler nights. In the room there is plenty of space. Light is provided from the double wood and glass doors which lead to the garden, and from the single door that leads out to the loggia with the sofas. In one corner of the lounge is a huge flat screen TV.
To the back of the lounge and passing under an arch on either side of the back wall there is the spacious kitchen. The room is bright although there are only four small windows. Along the back wall there is the kitchen unit which is well equipped with gas hobs, an oven, dishwasher and fridge with separate freezer. Work space is provided by a wooden island in the centre of the room.
To the other side of this room there is the large wooden dining table which can comfortably seat 8 people. On the well stocked sideboard there is a TV. Completing the floor is a bathroom with shower.
At the top of the stairs there is a bedroom immediately to the left. It's a lovely room with a warm wooden floor and huge windows looking out to the orchard to the back of the villa and onto the hills beyond. The room is spacious with a double bed and a wardrobe. It has a TV.
Two further steps lead into a small hall off which there is a large bathroom with shower and a bathtub with hand held shower. To the right is a second bedroom which has a Juliette balcony. It is furnished with a beautiful curtained, four poster double bed, an armchair and a large wardrobe. The wooden floor has a pretty rug on it. There is a small TV in the room.
The final bedroom is across the hall. This is the largest of the bedrooms. It has tradition Tuscan barn windows shaded by terracotta tiles. The lovely wooden floor is enhanced by the pretty ceiling of terracotta tiles and large beams. To one side is a flat screen TV and an armchair. The wardrobe is a walk-in wardrobe separated from the sleeping area by a wall behind the bed. This room has direct access to the only bathroom on the floor.
There is some distant noise from a road passing nearby, this is not a main road but there is a little traffic.
There is a fence around the villa however this is not completely dog proof, therefore care needs to be taken with pets.

Pool Info
The crystal pool is located at the end of the sunny garden and is protected by a thick hedge. It is surrounded by a well maintained lawn with an outdoor shower to one side while there is a pretty gazebo shading a couple of sunbeds to the other side. Next to the pool is a ping pong table.
The paved deck has a couple of umbrella and several sunbeds. It is the perfect place to relax with a glass of Tuscan wine while soaking up the warm sun.
The pool is 12x6 metres and 1.2-2.5 metres deep. It has roman steps to enter on one side with a diving board at the deep end. It's open from May to October, weather permitting.

Nearest town
There are three towns all within the same distance from the villa. These three are Terranuova Bracciolini, San Giovanni Valdarno and Loro Ciuffenna, they are all approximately 6km away and have all amenities. However, about 3.5km from the villa is Penna which has a small grocery shop. And the nearest restaurant is Il Pettirosso which is about 4km away.

Our accommodation, which cost less than £800 for the week, is in a converted stone farmhouse next to a 12th Century Franciscan chapel. There is a pergola shaded by vines round the back here we quickly settle into a rhythm of eating long pasta suppers while the shadows lengthen.
