Set in a tiny hamlet with an excellent local restaurant a short distance from Gaiole, one of Chianti’s most popular hill towns, Torretta Barbischio makes a wonderful base for visiting the wine-producing region. This property is breathing history and dates back to the 14th century. You’re within easy reach of Siena, Florence and San Gimignano when you want a bit of Tuscan flamboyance, but this beautifully furnished and immaculately kept villa will ensure hours of deep relaxation and contentment. With accommodation arranged over three floors inside and three terraces outside – all with unimpeded views of Chianti woodland and vineyards – plus a generous private pool, the villa is ideal for families with older children or a group of friends. A full party of six will find plenty of space to settle into. And if you have any fitness enthusiasts with you, there’s even a well-equipped home gym in the pool house.

There is much to enjoy inside Torretta Barbischio – ornate mirrors, richly coloured kelims and painted cupboards complement stylish contemporary windows and en-suite bathrooms – but the simple pleasures of watching the sun go down during dinner on the terrace may well come top of your holiday memories.
