The property was originally home to the local landowner, and there have been various dwellings on this site since the eleventh century. In the twelfth century the ruling landlords of the whole location, the Mazzalombardi family, fell out of favour with Frederico 1st who confiscated their property and gave it to the Ricasoli family who also owned the Castello di Brolio near Gaiole in Chianti, which is well worth a visit. Nowadays things are much quieter, and the Villa San Michele is a great place to stay, ideal for large family groups, looking for space, in a good location for visiting the local historical sights.

The large swimming pool is located down a short flight of steps from the villa surrounded by mature trees and shrubs. The paved area around the pool has large planted terracotta urns, a shower and plenty of sun loungers. Due to the elevated position of the property the pool has panoramic views over the Tuscan hills and countryside.

Villa San Michele is a large villa set in its own private grounds near to the villages of Lecchi in Chianti and San Sano. Both villages have grocery stores and San Sano has a well known restaurant 'La Grotta della rana'. It is possible to walk to both the villages and the restaurant is approximately 1km from the villa. The larger town of Gaiole in Chianti 8km away has a supermarket, bank, post office, pharmacy and restaurants.

Outside the mature well stocked gardens wrap around the house. There is a covered loggia next to the external stairs which has table and chairs for dining ‘al fresco’.

A flight of stone steps lead up to the front entrance, which opens directly into a large stately hall with high beamed ceilings and tiled floor.

An enormous inglenook style fireplace dominates the room, and there are windows at both ends, and a large wooden dining table and chairs. All the main living accommodation is on the first floor leading off from the main hall.

To the right near the fireplace is the kitchen, which is fully furnished with electric oven, separate electric hobs, a microwave oven, double sink and large free standing fridge/freezer. There is plenty of storage space and a large pantry.

Also to the right of the hall on the opposite side of the fireplace is a small lounge, comfortably furnished with sofas, TV and DVD player.
To the left of the hall runs a wide corridor decorated with planted terracotta urns. There is a ceramic radiator which is a feature of the heating system standing at the far end of the corridor.

The first room on the left is bedroom one, this is a large room with high beamed ceilings and tiled floors. There is an ornate ironwork double bed with large matching wardrobe and chest of drawers. There is an ensuite shower room which bedroom two also has access to. The window overlooks the pool area and has views of the gardens and countryside.
Bedroom two is a very pretty room; again with beamed ceilings and tiled floors, it has twin wrought iron beds and painted furniture to match. There is access to an ensuite bathroom with shower, shared with bedroom one. This would be an ideal arrangement for a family with two children to stay in these two rooms.

Bedroom three is another large double room with beamed ceilings and tiled floors. There is an intricate wrought iron double bed, large wardrobe and matching furniture. There is no ensuite with this room, but directly opposite the doorway there is a small bathroom with shower. Please note that with bedrooms one, two and three, they all have two small steps up to each of the rooms

Bedroom four is on the right-hand side of the hallway and does not have any steps up to the entrance. This is a large airy room with tiled floors and beamed ceilings; it has a wooden sleigh bed (130x190) and matching furniture. There is also a private ensuite bathroom with shower.

Downstairs (accessed via the garden) there is a further lounge area which has unusual domed brickwork ceilings and is comfortably furnished with sofas, chairs and an open fireplace.

Two archways separate the lounge from another dining room which is smaller and more intimate than the grand entrance hall dining area.

Next to the lounge is a small study with writing desk, chair, sofa and bookcase. These three rooms are very cool in summer and provide a comfortable retreat during the heat of the day, whilst still being close to the gardens and pool area.

A well renowned restaurant 'La Grotta della rana' 1km from the villa.

Internet WI-FI Onsite - available in the villa for free. Please bring your own laptop.

A great villa for large family groups, or families travelling together.
Beautiful mature gardens with stunning views.

The villa owners have advised us that although they will accept children under seven years of age they would prefer not to because of the steep external entrance staircase and the unfenced pool area.

Pool Info

The swimming pool is at the rear of the property down a short flight of stone steps. The paved area surrounding the pool has planted pots and containers. There is a shower to one side and plenty of pool side loungers.

The swimming pool is a single ended roman bath shape with integral steps but no handrail.
The pool measures 10 metres by 5 metres. The shallow end is 1.20 metres increasing to 1.80 metres at its deepest. It is open from the end of April to mid October.

Local attractions Restaurants : Malborghetto in Lecchi, Bar Ucci in Volpaia, Panzanele in Luccarelli, La Piazza in La Piazza, La Grotta della Rana in San Sano Bezienswaardigheden : Monteriggioni, San Gimignano, Radda, Siena, ...

Pros It was the perfect location for two families to spend time together with plenty of sitting areas in and around the villa and pool. It served as an ideal base of operations for site seeing and tourism, while being a destination unto itself.
Local attractions The restaurant in nearby San Sano was wonderful. The host was delightful and we began referring to him as Mr. Perfecto, because he always made everything perfecto!

Pros Villa San Michele has a amazing location with spectacular views to Tuscany vineyards and hills. Its surrounded by beautiful garden which is nicely maintained. Pool and couple of seating areas are a great places to relax.
Cons Minuses are uncomfortable, narrow beds, which are relatively high above ground.

Pros The location, and the garden / pool area - which was fantastic. Loved being able to swim and look across the hillside and be detached from modern life
Cons The house is old and charmning, but outdated - the laptop didn't work, i couldn't connect to the wi-fi, and the television i could only get one italian channel - in short, all the technology was poor. However, wasn't that fussed, as didn't mind being away from internet and tv, although at times could have been useful for the kids - but for the price, should probably get it sorted. The technology dropped my score from 9 out of 10 to 8 out of ten

Pros Wonderful pool with great view.
The two terrasses and the garden.
It's quiet, but not too far from the main road.
Cons The comfort of the beds (mattress) could be improved.
Local attractions Restaurants: Malborghetto is good and very close. La bottega del trenta is a must once during the stay. Attractions: Brolio and the surrounding villages (Radda, Castellina, Volpaia).

Pros It location is superb. Our friends and grown up family joined us and it was perfect for us all.
Cons Lack of comfort, poor quality of kitchen appliances, lack of dishwasher, worst beds we have ever slept in, inaccurate description of available satellite TV facilities. We missed Wimbledon and the Football Cup Final as a result! Neither did we appreciate the ants nest in the bathroom.
Local attractions Malborghetto in Lecchi. It has a cookery school but this must be booked in advance as it gets very busy. A superb restaurant with great food and ambience. We went several times. www.malborghetto.net
To Tuscany team comments for this review:

31.07.2012
The villa description mentions no dishwasher. The villa description was subsequently changed to "TV Sat news only", there are only free to air channels available, it was not the intention that "TV Sat" meant a full range of UK Sat TV including Wimbledon coverage.
