Casa Virginia, San Sano - Gaiole in Chianti - Siena and Chianti

3 bedrooms 3 bathrooms 6 guests Private Pool 5 - Superb - Superb 5

You will love Casa Virginia’s openness: set on a gentle slope above a vineyard, with a backdrop of olive trees, pines and cypresses, the sky above is large and the horizon wide. The villa is well placed for visiting Siena – and Florence and San Gimignano are easily reachable – but its impressive private pool, charming and generous garden, three furnished terraces and loggia will compete for your attention. Swimmers, especially, will appreciate the pool’s substantial size (12 metres long, with a deep end that justifies a diving board).

Converted from a traditional barn and dovecote, Casa Virginia does not disappoint inside either. Traditional meets modern, solid meets stylish: from the terracotta tiled floors, beamed ceilings and scattering of antiques to the well-equipped, glass-screened contemporary kitchen and rattan-furnished loggia. Arranged over three levels, with outside spaces on three sides, the villa offers multiple options for chasing sun or shade through the day, enjoying a quiet moment alone or socialising. Ideal for groups of up to six family or friends.

We love this bright, airy villa for the thoughtfulness that has gone into it: from the eye-catching terracotta planters and vine-covered pergola outside to the interior layout, which creates a series of interconnected spaces. The cook of the party need never feel cut off from the rest of the group, for instance, being divided only by a glass screen from the dining room and a step or two away from the terrace outside the kitchen. This latter spot is surely a great choice for lazy, hazy breakfasts.

The small peaceful village of San Sano has one restaurant, called La Grotta della Rana, a small grocery store, and a small church with Sunday morning services at 10am. This medieval village is very popular with walkers and cyclists, surrounded as it is by pathways, which are ideal for early morning walks and bike rides.

It’s a beautiful villa inside and out. It’s the last villa in a small village. You have sweeping views of the rolling hills of Tuscany, with vineyards, olive trees, and other small villages. And you can walk from the villa through a charming small village with one restaurant ( it’s pretty good, too!)

Inside, my favorite room was a sun room, something I’ve not seen in Italy before. It had nice light from morning until the afterglow of sunset was finished. (Most villas are built into the hillside and are quite dark inside.) The villa had every appliance, tool, dish, everything you could possibly need. I’ve never seen a condo or home rental so well-stocked.

Outside, there are three distinct areas you can choose to sit based on whether you want sun, want a breeze or not. Two of them are covered if there’s rain. That doesn’t count the pool area, which is huge—the pool itself was plenty big enough for me to keep up my home routine of swimming laps.

Elena and Massimo were wonderful hosts, offering to bring anything we need and bringing us gifts we didn’t expect. Elena encouraged me to contact her on WhatsApp anytime I had any question.
Local attractions Malborghetto in nearby Lecchi is minutes away. It’s so good, I don’t understand why it doesn’t have a Michelin star. Great food, very friendly, English spoken fluently. Radda is my favorite town in Tuscany. It’s a 15 minute drive from Casa Virginia. It’s just large enough to have several good restaurants, a wonderful deli/grocery, Casa Porciatti and its companion wine store where Riccardo will quickly learn your taste preferences and recommend wines that you will love. He will teach you if you want about Italian wines and which ones go best with which foods. Radda is small enough that it is not overrun with tourists. In fact, most of the tourists seem to be Italians.

Thank you so much for your lovely review! We are delighted that you had a great stay at Casa Virginia and were able to take advantage of all that the area has to offer – Radda is one of our favourite places too! We’d be thrilled to welcome you back to Tuscany again soon.
