There is nothing standard about Emozione Toscana, the home of a well-known local artist, which is one of the reasons why the villa is full of character. Even its construction – a seemingly haphazard mix of brick, stone and terracotta – fascinates. Every room is strikingly individual, with an array of artwork, including some by the owner, to enjoy. Its extensive garden, filled with a wonderful variety of trees, shrubs and terracotta pots, and lovely private pool invite you to spend many hours moving between sun and dappled shade.

Set in low-lying farmland less than an hour’s drive east of Viareggio, this makes a great base for enjoying both the coast and some of Tuscany’s best-known cultural gems. Lucca, Pisa, San Gimignano and Florence are all easy day trips. Sleeping up to eight people, Emozione Toscana suits groups of family or friends equally. You’ll come together around the pool and under the lovely loggia for al-fresco meals, and scatter happily with a book or a drink (or both) to favoured chairs and benches in this great garden.

Our Thoughts
It’s hard not to rave about the secluded grounds of this villa because so much thought has gone into them. The pool, its terrace and pergola are elegant and thoroughly enjoyable places to lounge on the good-quality furniture. The loggia is perfect for coffee, aperitifs or al-fresco meals. The trees – many of them fruiting – create a wonder-world of light and shade. As befits a place you’ll want to spend a lot of time at, the villa has a collection of books in English, French and Italian. When you feel like venturing out, you might want to take the train to Florence, rather than drive, from the local station at Altopascio.

Notes
Bedroom 1 can only be accessed from the ground floor, there is no connection to the other bedrooms on the first floor. There is a separate fenced area with a kennel that can be used. Please note, however, that care must be taken with children and pets in relation to the large private pond within the garden, which is not fenced off. The pond is not for swimming in, although children can fish in it if they have rods. The owner, who is available should you need any help, lives in a house in the grounds. This does not overlook the villa, although it can view the pool. They have two dogs, which do not roam freely.
