Raise a glass to Tuscany – there are few better places to do so than at this villa in the heart of the Chianti Classico vineyards. All points of the compass lead to top wineries, such as Castello di Fonterutoli in the nearby hamlet, so close you can go there by foot. The historic wine town of Castellina is only a little further, where shopping in the market on Saturday doubles as a way to immerse yourself in Tuscan life. (And don’t miss the treat of an ice cream from the town’s superb Gelataria di Castellina.) With San Gimignano, Siena and Florence within easy reach, too, you’re spoilt for choice for days out.
Poggio Tondo has an unusual design, more like a mountain house than a typical Tuscan villa. Its layout is distinct, too. While the three bedrooms are tucked upstairs, there is also a huge lounge-diner and a fully equipped kitchen on both levels. This handy configuration offers your party of six more space to spread out, yet there is still a communal feeling to this place.
The obvious space to come together is on one of the generous terraces that extend along the width of the building on each level overlooking the lush lawn. This is where you’ll be able to pull up a front-row seat for the main event – the view. They stretch right across Chianti to Siena shimmering on the skyline. It’s just beckoning you to visit.

Der Aufenthalt in dem Haus hatte ihre Licht- und Schattenseiten.
Zuerst das Licht: Das Haus liegt super. Es bietet sich eine sagenhafte Aussicht. Sie lässt sich vom Garten oder Balkon genießen. Einfach wunderschön. Ebenfalls super sind das große eingezäunte Grundstück und der große neuwertige Pool. Die Eigentümer sind sehr nett und hilfsbereit.
Auf die Schattenseite kommt, dass sich direkt unter dem Grundstück eine viel befahrene Straße befindet.
Diese wird wegen ihrer Kurven gerne von Motorradfahrern genutzt. Entsprechend ist der Lärm, hauptsächlich am Wochenende sehr störend.
Was auch nicht super war, dass für das eine Schlafzimmer das Bad eine Etage tiefer liegt. Dadurch leidet der Comfort etwas. Auch die Ausstattung ist eher einfach.
Wir mußten in der ersten Woche abends die Heizung anwerfen. Dafür haben wir am Ende zusätzlich 140 € für Gas bezahlt.
Fanden wir für die paar Stunden wo die Heizung lief recht viel.
Die Nähe zu Siena ist toll. Wir waren mehrmals dort und es hat uns mehr gefallen als Florenz.
