La Torre at Pretaccione, Castelnuovo Berardenga - Siena and Chianti
Once the home of travelling priests 1000 years ago, Pretaccione has been sympathetically restored into individually owned holiday homes, preserving its charm with original features. The small collection of cottages and apartments each have their own furnished outdoor space where you can dine al fresco or sit back with a glass of Chianti from the Dievole vineyard below you and enjoy the south facing views of the Tuscan hills and valley beyond.
After a match on the resort's private tennis court, while relaxing in the sun by the pool, you might dream up some day trips to the cultural delights of Siena and Florence or jaunts to the local villages of Lecchi and San Sano within 4 km, where both have a family run restaurant and bar/wine shop. Pretaccione is a walker's paradise. Right on your doorstep is the Dievole Natural Path, 27 km of marked woodland walking and cycling trails that wind their way through this impressive winery estate. All trails lead to the Dievole wine tasting cellar and open terraced restaurant.

A hugely enjoyable and relaxing 9 night stay in late June. Very roomy for 4 - parents and adult son and daughter. Good kitchen and bathroom facilities. Very peaceful location with great views of vineyards and forests; only sounds being birds, insects and vineyard tractors. Excellent pool (with lovely views) and tennis court - both used a lot. This apartment has its own spacious courtyard, private, sunny, but with shade in some parts of the day (which is nice).
We experienced hot weather - into the low 30s every day. The top room in particular did get hot, and it would have been nice to be able to open all windows at night with confidence... but insects need to be 'managed' to avoid mosquitos in the accommodation.
Recommend a high clearance vehicle for the local gravel roads and the long gravel driveway accessing the property. We hired a Jeep Renegade which was perfect.We enjoyed a coffee at the restaurant in San Sano, which is charming (intended to have a meal as the menu looks good), Gaiole has a few shops and restaurants including the closest (small) supermarket. Apart from many quiet/relaxing days at the property, we used the accommodation for visits to Florence (1hr 15 mins to the 'part and ride' / tram) and Siena (30 mins). Really enjoyed a visit to the nearby sculpture park which was unexpectedly wonderful. Whole area is beguiling with vineyards, olive groves, hills, forests, small villages, hilltop settlements etc.
