La Torre at Pretaccione, Castelnuovo Berardenga - Siena and Chianti

Although the access road was rather 'bumpy', the rest of our experience was superb. The house easily accommodated my family of four adults and two children. For those with young children (we had a two year old and a four year old), great care needs to be taken with the many steps. The kitchen was very well equipped, there were plentiful bath and pool towels, the dishwasher and washing machine were used every day, making our lives easier and clothes dried quickly on the terrace.
The pool is great, with enough sunbeds to accommodate all who used the area. (I can recommend an early morning swim - peaceful amongst the beautiful surroundings).

We loved to have an early evening drink in Gaiole, a lovely little town with bars and restaurants - ideal for watching the world go by, and a real buzz on our last Friday night, when we had a nice and very reasonably priced meal in one of the friendly restaurants. There is a Co op supermarket there, where you can get anything you need. (The biggest and best Co op is the Co op FI near Siena, about twenty-five minutes away). We visited Siena and Florence, and many of the beautiful small towns and villages in the area. We particularly enjoyed a morning in Radda, with its amazing views.

Bel endroit bien entretenu dans un très beau cadre. L’endroit est très difficile à trouver même en suivant. les indications fournies par to tuscany. Le chemin pour accéder à la maison n’est vraiment pas aisé et comme la maison est très isolée de tout, il faut prendre la voiture à chaque fois. L’accès à la maison même n’est pas très pratique non plus (surtout avec de très jeunes enfants)avec d’abord un escalier en pierre à descendre puis un a remonter… cela donne aussi un petit cote claustrophobe à la cour extérieure. La maison en elle même est spacieuse, bien entretenue et très bien équipée.

A quiet rustic farmhouse setting with good space for six people, bigger than it looks in the photographs;
Shutters and metal gauze fly screens on ALL windows;
A nice swimming pool that gets the sun all day, with plenty of sunloungers.

Some suggestions to make the best of it
Come with a sense of humour that in Italy, in or out of the villa, everything doesn't work all of the time. Chill.
Rent an off-roader for the ground clearance on the drive, though it can be done in a Fiat 500 with care
Keep to six - the extra two beds are bunks in a stairwell so not really suitable for young children, and adults would find it cramped
Come with a road map of the area and a satnav. Preplan your route as a sequence of villages so you keep to proper roads, otherwise satnav will take you on goat tracks up mountains as the "quickest route". A phone navigator won't work as you near the villa (no signal to triangulate).

Try Malborghetto, La Grotte di Rana and Castle Brolio restaurants locally. The castle tour with winetasting and lunch, and the Chianti sculpture park, are worthwhile. Florence is great to visit but suggest you take the road to Montevarchi then the motorway, this is a much easier drive than the more direct route. Park at the airport and take the tram into the centre of town (E1.50, masks obligatory, every 8 mins) Siena is closer, more meiaeval. Park at the "stadium park" and walk in to the centre, it's well signposted.Al Mangiais a great restaurant, on the main square.
