A converted watermill, set on the side of a gentle hill and cradled by forests, Mulino del Rigualdo in Grosseto, the southernmost province of Tuscany, is a tranquil retreat for a couple or a small family seeking a little solitude. The free-flowing river that once powered this mill today provides a soothing soundtrack to a memorable holiday, wherever you are the grounds – relaxing on the upper or lower terrace, beneath the gazebo or by the private pool. What’s more, there’s a hot tub located under a canvas pergola – perfect for unwinding in all weathers.

Inside, this two-bedroom villa revels in its heritage, with warm terracotta-tiled floors, wood-beamed ceilings and patches of exposed stone. Yet it’s also a very comfortable space, with a big corner sofa, large dining table and chairs, and a beautiful hearth that can be lit on cooler evenings. Enclosed by walls dating back to the 11th Century, this sleepy town boasts magnificent views of the surrounding hills, valleys and forests, and is located within the La Pietra and Farma nature reserves. 10km away from the villa is another larger town.
