But nearby Montevarchi will prove irresistible to visit, too. Here you can step back in time amid its medieval streets and even witness age-old traditions such as the yearly re-enactment of the historic football game Gioco del Pozzo, which takes place every September. The roads to Siena, Florence and Arezzo meet here, so you’ll be tempted to venture further afield, too.

After all that exploring, you’ll relish a refreshing dip in your own private pool, just one of the joys of this garden. Stretch out on a sun-lounger at the pool’s edge or lay a rug on the sweep of lawn. When the sun is high, retreat to the pergola, also a good spot for al fresco meals and sundowners.

Villa Nene's living area is located on the first floor which feels bright and modern. It's aired by patio doors to a private terrace in the centre and large windows overlooking the town of Montevarchi. There are stairs leading up to a rooftop terrace, a place to have an aperitif where you can enjoy panoramic views.

The cottage has a veranda in the shade and inside, its open-plan design unites cooking, eating and relaxing, with the beamed ceiling giving a nod to tradition. Here, the double bedroom and bathroom are to the rear – with everything on one level, this is a great choice of accommodation for anyone with mobility issues.
