San Donato in Perano grew from a cluster of small villages and houses built around the church of San Donato. It became fortified and joined a network of medieval castles which can still be seen on a clear day. During the 15th Century the fortifications were strengthened with the building of a double wall around the estate. Surrounded by fertile agricultural land the castle became a country residence to a wealthy landlord. It was bought in the 16th Century by the Strozzi family, who were an influential Florentine family.

The hamlet of Il Cellese is a small collection of 7 fully refurbished new apartments and a restaurant in the Castellina in Chianti area of Tuscany. The apartments have all been built with the typical Tuscan building materials of stone, terracotta tiled floors and ceilings and wooden beams to give a traditional look to the property, but the interiors have been designed with high quality modern furnishings and appliances.
Villa Santarello is located at the end of a short drive, next to a country road. It is surrounded by a well kept garden, with mature shrubs and trees. This is enclosed by an established hedge but has no fence. There is a vegetable garden and the owners have planted fruit trees, both of which you pass in order to reach the front door.
The property was originally home to the local landowner, and there have been various dwellings on this site since the eleventh century. In the twelfth century the ruling landlords of the whole location, the Mazzalombardi family, fell out of favour with Frederico 1st who confiscated their property and gave it to the Ricasoli family who also owned the Castello di Brolio near Gaiole in Chianti, which is well worth a visit. Nowadays things are much quieter, and the Villa San Michele is a great place to stay, ideal for large family groups, looking for space, in a good location for visiting the local historical sights.
