Forte dei Marmi sits on a long stretch of beach, making it the perfect destination to sit and soak up the Tuscan sun. You will find that most of Forte dei Marmi's seafront is lined with private 'bagni'. These bagni are little beach clubs that own sections of the beachfront, where visitors can pay to use their facilities for the day. Deciding to spend the day at one of the beach clubs in Fort dei Marmi will not lead to disappointment. Most include sun loungers with umbrellas, changing cabanas, showers, restaurants or bars, kids' play areas and more.  

Non-paying beach visitors cannot lay their towels on the waterfront of these areas. However, a walk along the water's edge is welcome, perfect for sunset strolls up and down the coastline. 

Whilst during the low season, you may be lucky enough to turn up to a beach club and find a spot free at one of the beach clubs, during the high season, it is essential to book ahead of time, ensuring that you get the spot you want and closest to the beachfront.

The Forte dei Marmi open-air market is not to be missed when visiting the town famously known as one of Italy’s highest quality and well-known markets. The famous market, held in the centre of Forte dei Marmi in Piazza Marconi, runs every Wednesday from 8am to 1:30pm all year round, with a smaller version on Sundays from Easter Sunday through October. 

The market sells classic cashmere clothing, summer dresses and swimsuits, homeware, locally made ceramic, leather goods, handbags, shoes, and so much more! 

The market may not be suitable for children, as it can get extremely busy with tourists and locals flooding the square every week. It is also best to get there early before the crowds get too big. The market forms two rings (an outer and an inner ring), so make sure you don’t miss out on some of the beautiful products on offer. 

It is also important to bring cash to the market, with most vendors preferring cash payments.

Forte dei Marmi, spanning over 9 square kilometres, is an ideal destination for bike exploration, boasting flat terrain perfect for cyclists. Residents and visitors alike travel on two wheels year-round, whether heading to the beach, shops, or simply enjoying leisurely rides. The town features extensive bike lanes and bike-and-pedestrian paths, ensuring easy travel without the worries of road traffic or parking, especially during the busy summer months. A scenic path runs parallel to the beach, providing the perfect route for morning or afternoon rides. 

Cycling in Forte dei Marmi also makes for a fantastic family activity, with numerous bike rental shops, such as Cicli Maggi, offering a variety of bike rentals and suggesting local routes to explore more of the local area. Children can also enjoy riding their bikes around the piazza while parents relax with an aperitivo at nearby cafes.

Forte dei Marmi has a rich history dating back to the 15th century when the Via di Marnia connected the Apuan Alps to a coastal quay, transporting valuable marble used by Michelangelo and Giambologna. In the 16th century, the Via Provinciale was built to transport marble and iron ore from Elba. 

Towards the end of the 16th century, Leopold I, Grand Duke of Tuscany, commissioned a strategically placed fort to protect the coastline, reflecting the town's growing commercial activity. This fort, known as the Fortino, included facilities for a stable, carriage house, and dwellings for key personnel and is now a venue for events and exhibitions. This fort remains present in the town's crescent and the towns namesake. 

The town's increasing marble trade led to the construction of its first pier, the Pontile, between 1867 and 1877, featuring tracks for loading trolleys, a steam strain, and a crane. Although the pier was destroyed during World War II, it was rebuilt in 1955 and remains a popular spot today, offering stunning views of the sea and the town's beaches that attract numerous visitors each year.

June is usually the best month for visiting Forte dei Marmi, with long sunny days and typically fewer crowds than during July and August. A visit to the seaside town during September can also be enjoyable; however, it will feel less busy with the summer visitors often having left.  

Both locals and visitors flock to the town during the warmer months of July and August for some time at the coast, making it the best time to experience Italian beach culture. During this peak season, you can expect higher prices. However, prices aside, restaurants and cafes are lively, perfect for people-watching, and all the shops are open.

Forte dei Marmi caters to all diners, offering Michelin-star restaurants to local cafes. If you are spending the day at one of the beach clubs, there is no need to venture far, as you will often find a restaurant onsite offering delicious dishes to enjoy on the beach. The easiest way to reach Forte dei Marmi is by car, as trains and buses offer more complex travel routes. 

Once in town, you can leave your car behind, with everything within walking distance. Alternatively, hire a bike to explore the charming streets and scenic coastline. 

Most bagni and hotels provide parking facilities for their guests. If not, you can park on the street, but check the signs for permitted parking times and any associated fees.
