Accessible Villas in Tuscany

  • If you are looking for a villa suitable for less mobile guests or a wheelchair accessible villa in Tuscany, our team is here to help. While we do not offer a fixed collection of accessible villas, we take a personalised approach to finding a property that meets your specific requirements.

Accessibility can vary significantly between villas. Many of our villas have features which make it easier for our guests to enjoy their holiday. Because our villa specialists personally visit the majority of the villas we represent, we can provide clear and detailed information about internal layouts, doorway widths, bathroom design and outdoor access. This allows you to book with confidence, knowing the villa is suitable for your needs.

  • What makes a villa suitable for guests with reduced mobility

A selection of our Tuscany villas includes features that may suit less mobile guests. These can consist of level access, ground-floor bedrooms and bathrooms, full ground-floor accommodation, and outdoor areas with minimal steps.

Some villas are suitable for wheelchair users and offer wider doorways, adapted bathrooms with seating, and handrails where required. Outdoor spaces vary, and we will always explain surfaces, gradients and access to pools and terraces in detail.

If you are looking for a more accessible villa, please get in touch with our team before booking a villa that may require wheelchair access, so we can ensure the villa is entirely suited to your individual needs and avoid any uncertainty on arrival.

  • Personal experience from our villa specialists

One of our villa specialists, Paula, has firsthand experience travelling with a wheelchair user and understands that holidays require a bit more planning. Below is a short account of her stay in a To Tuscany villa.

“As one of the villa specialists working for To Tuscany, it was inevitable that I would one day get the chance to stay in one of our beautiful villas. But travelling abroad is not always straightforward for our family, as our adult son uses a wheelchair, so our Tuscan adventure required a little extra planning.

We stayed at La Fornace 2 in the lovely resort of La Rimessa in northern Tuscany. The villa was perfect for us, all on one level, with wide spaces for the wheelchair and a fantastic accessible wet room complete with a shower seat and arm rests.

The pool had Roman steps, and although we looked into hiring a hoist, it proved a little complicated and costly, so we managed with some teamwork to get my son into the pool. The pool area has small stones, which made pushing the wheelchair trickier, but with patience, we managed. We also enjoyed walks around the estate, where we met some of the animals - a lovely touch.”

  • Getting around Tuscany with reduced mobility

Travelling around Tuscany with reduced mobility is possible with the proper planning. We suggest that all our guests who are not bringing their own car, hire a car, as many villas are in remote locations that are not reachable by public transport. We would also suggest the same for our less mobile guests, as this can also provide another level of comfort when on holiday.

However, when travelling to the larger cities in Tuscany, such as Pisa and Florence, public transport can be a practical and accessible option.

In Pisa, the Pisa Mover is ideal for reaching the city centre, with guests able to use the park-and-ride from either of the two car parks - Via Aurelia car park and Via Goletta car park.

For more information about Pisa and how to get there, visit our Pisa travel guide or the shuttle page (https://pisa-mover.com/en/)

Florence is also easily reached by train, which is how Paula travelled to the city from Empoli. At Empoli station, there is free disabled parking.  You need to book assistance for the train 24 hours in advance.  The staff are very helpful when helping visitors on and off the trains and guiding them through the station.

Lucca is also a great option, with free parking outside the city walls, and if you are staying there, your accommodation can help you get a permit to drive and park inside the walls.

Montecatini is another lovely town to visit, which has accessible street parking.

UK Blue Badges should be accepted across Tuscany, but we always recommend checking the latest advice on the Gov.uk website before you travel.

Our team are always on hand to provide information for guests who are looking for a more accessible villa in Tuscany and peace of mind when booking their next holiday, so please contact the team for more information. You are welcome to explore our full collection of villas, but we always recommend speaking with a Villa Specialist before booking so we can confirm that a property is suitable for your specific needs and answer any questions you may have.

  • FAQs

    1. Do you offer wheelchair accessible villas in Tuscany?

Whilst we do not offer a fixed collection of accessible villas, at To Tuscany we do have a selection that may be suitable for wheelchair users. These may include ground-floor bedrooms and bathrooms, outdoor areas with minimal steps, wider doorways, and adapted bathrooms with seating and handrails.

We understand how important it is for our guests to find the perfect villa for them, especially for those with limited mobility and wheelchair users. Therefore, we take a personalised approach to finding a property that meets your specific requirements.

Please speak to one of our Villa Specialists, who will be able to assist you in finding a villa that suits your needs.

    2. Do your villas have accessible bathrooms?

A selection of our villas feature bathrooms that are suitable for guests with reduced mobility or wheelchair users. These may include ground floor or lower-level bathrooms, walk in showers, shower seating and handrails positioned within the shower area or next to the toilet.

As accessibility varies from property to property, not all villas offer the same facilities. We therefore always recommend speaking with our team before booking so we can confirm whether a villa has the specific bathroom features you require and ensure it is fully suited to your needs.

    3. Are pools suitable for less mobile guests?

Whether a villa’s pool is suitable for less mobile guests depends on several factors, including how easily the pool can be reached from the villa, number of steps or uneven ground in the garden, and the type of pool access, such as Roman steps or a ladder. For this reason, we always recommend reading the villa description carefully and contacting our team to confirm that the chosen villa has a shared or private pool that is suitable for all guests.

    4. Is Tuscany a good holiday destination for less mobile guests or wheelchair users?

Yes, Tuscany can be a good holiday destination for less mobile guests and wheelchair users with the right planning.

Hiring a car, or driving your own, is strongly recommended due to the region's iconic hilly landscape and many of our villas' rural locations. Disabled parking is available across the region and at train stations. Public transport, whilst limited, is an option for guests looking to travel into the larger cities of Pisa or Florence. However, some historic towns and villages may present challenges due to uneven surfaces and steep streets.

Yet many guests choose to relax at their villa instead. We offer a selection of villas suitable for guests with reduced mobility or wheelchair users, including properties with accessible living areas and pools.  Please get in touch with a Villa Specialist if you are considering Tuscany as your next holiday destination and are looking for a villa
